Last Saturday: 6000' of climbing at Henry CoeFast Eddy

I just got these few pictures because some spud forgot to charge my camera batteries. I rode with Derek a couple weeks ago at Demo Forest with Francis and Ray and the singlespeed group. Some of them rode three loops!

Anyhow, Paul J, Derek, and a closet passionite, Dave were waiting at the Hot Springs Bridge at 8:30. We climbed Jackson Trail until near the top, then dropped part-way down the north side of Rock Tower to trade the steep fire road section for some very-narrow, game-trail-like singletrack. This singletrack:

We dropped down the Kelly Lake singletrack, and rode up the road (heheh) to just above Coit Lake. Some planning ensued, and we decide to ride around the lake singletrack for another planning session above Pacheco Falls.

Here's Dave, on the lake singletrack, about to dab, but still smiling:

The singletrack around the west side of Coit Lake is finally cleanable after a couple years of downed trees and stuff. Coit is an awesome swimming hole when it gets a little warmer.

This is a paste-up from photoshop. Paul actually has two full-size arms in real life.

After some planning, hemming and hawing, we decided to drop down to Pacheco Falls. This increases a 23 mile, 5000' climb ride by two miles and 1000' of climbing. Yup, an average 20% grade to climb out of that freakin' hole.

Here's the (unmarked) Pacheco Falls Trail. Though you can't really tell in the picture, the Sierras are visable in the distance.

I am in awe of Derek, having ridden the whole bitch-of-a-ride in onefuckinspeed. He is the man!

After the falls, we rode Coit Road, Coit Lake Trail, Cross Canyon Trail, Grapevine Springs and Anza Trail on the way out. Oh yes how we love the singletrack. Mmm mmm good. 5.5 hours, 25 mi. 6k' vert.

I didn't actually think my camera was cooperating at this point. The batteries were done. Nice pic though:

Great pics Ed. We'll have to that again. I hear Mississippi-------------do you?
I've got an idea for a 50+ miler. I just need a free 12 hours.Fast Eddy

Here's the route:

Start at Gilroy Hot Springs entrance.

Up Jackson Trail to Rock Tower.

North on Rock Tower to Domino Pond Trail.

Left on Domino to Coit Spring Trail to Coit Camp.

Up Coit Road to Mahoney Road to China Hole Trail.

China Hole Swimming and Resting. Probably 2 hours so far.

Up China Hole trail to HQ for Gatorade and Water. 3 hours.

Flat Frog, Frog Lake Trail and Middle Ridge to Poverty Flat. 4+ hours.

Poverty Flat Road to Jackass Trail and up to the top of Mt. Sizer.

Through the gun club to Hat Rock and down Rock House Ridge.

Up Bear Mt. Road to Bear Springs Trail to Mississippi Lake. 7 hours?

Pacheco Ridge Road to Pacheco Camp, up Coit Road to Wagon Road and up to the top of Wilson Field Hill.

Down Kelly Lake Trail and up Coit Road to Wasno Road.

Down Domino Pond Trail, Grapevine and Anza Trails back to the car where we stashed the beer and food.

Maybe a little bbq at Hunting Hollow?

This is most of what we rode, plus a 20 mile HQ loop, plus Rock House Ridge, plus 15 miles out to Mississippi. Maybe it's 60 miles. Maybe skipping the initial climb up Jackson would be a good idea.

Sounds good to me. Let me know when.I think we should build up to it first. Missippi is a good break in ride.We don't have 12 hours of Daylight yet do we? The ride would have to start at 7am at the latest. Then a BBQ in the dark afterwards? Hmmmm I smell chevys. Dave, Derik--------you listining? Add me to your Dist list.

the "Tie Down Trail" off of Kaiser-Aetna road? It's pretty swanK. Highly recommended, mainly for beauty but it has its fun moments as well.

I might be camping @ coe this weekend. sWeet

I've heard about Tie Down Trail somewhere else recently. Camping would make it more reachable. I've never been out that far except for the official camping weekend.
Sounds long...fourarm

This is a ride I did last fall...it was 57 miles and 5:55 ride time. Longest ride I've ever done at Coe.

Start at HQ
Flat Frog, Frog Lake Trail and Middle Ridge to Poverty Flat
Poverty Flat Road to Willow Ridge
Past wrecking ball on Roller Coaster Ridge
Mississippi Lake
Alquist trail (sp?)
Out and back on Orestimba Corral trail
Coit Road to ?? Road to Pacheco Camp
Over and down to Kelly lake and up the firebreak out of there
Jackson /Anza trail to the bottom
Mahoney Road to China Hole Trail.
Up China Hole trail to HQ for Gatorade

Your plan sounds longer and VERY difficult. The Bear Mtn road climb is a killer. They also may have finished building the singletrack that connects the top of Jackass with Rockhouse (although I haven't tried it) so you could avoid the gun club.
You're glad I didn't come.Fast Eddy

6 hours? Man you are fast.

My route is similar other than rock house ridge. It might have a little more climbing. The biggest difference is that my route ends in DH singletrack instead of a five mile uphill.

The singletrack from Blue Ridge to Hat Rock is indeed passable, but it drops down into a canyon. If you pass through the gun club it's all downhill.

Don't you think that Willow Ridge Trail/Roller Coaster is more difficult than Bear Mtn Rd? I've only ever been on Roller Coaster going west. The others I've only seen on the map.

6 hours was actual saddle time, I was out there for about 7.5.

If the goal is to get to Miss. lake from the bottom of Willow Ridge, then I think Willow ridge is much faster and easier. You have to do about 4 miles of canyon riding just to get to the bottom of Bear Mtn. Then the first .4 mile is a hike-a-bike then it is just plain steep and unshaded. Willow Ridge trail is rideable until the last half mile and Roller Coaster passes quickly once past the wrecking ball.

All this talk of Coe makes me want to go ride there...especially when it is so green.
Agree - try coming DOWN from Bear Mt. first ...Yeti girl
Apr 10, 2002 7:17 PM
I came down it, and it is incredibly steep - you know the kind of downhills out there, where you just feel like you're plunging off the face of the Earth?! It would be a very long, HOT hike-a-bike up it, and like fourarm said, riding in that direction, it is preceded by riding through miles of rocky creek bed (not the fun kind of rocky riding) down by Arnold Horse Camp. I was just out there 2 weekends ago, and the long rides are definitely calling! Hoping to ride out there again Sunday; it's so beautiful out there right now. Maybe we'll see you out there, or hook up with you for a ride.
Not this weekend...Fast Eddy

I had a great time riding with you guys and I recovered fairly quickly afterwards (musta been that burrito). I don't know about a 50 miler, but keep me posted. I know it gets really hot in the summer so maybe later in the Fall? I'm also interested in doing Mississippi...
