New Rigid SS(13 posts)

New Rigid SSFast Eddy

Actually a double-speed if you have a couple of hex wrenches. The train will not wait for you while you're wildly spinning away on your 2:1 gear.

I was looking for a new frame, and I came across this in marketplace. New, the frame and matching Kelly fork are $900. This one is near new, and came to me as a complete bike for $750.

I swapped out some of the parts, and I'll probably swap some more before I'm done.

I had to walk back from the maiden voyage at Skeggs though.Fast Eddy

I took up Francis on his more-than-generous offer to drive me up to Skeggs for the Wednesday night MTBR group ride. Left work at 4, grabbed a burrito for the train, and Francis was waiting when I arrived.

To make a long story short, I was struggling to keep up with Kenny G-Spot down Virginia Mill. All was well even as I cleaned the very-technical section down into the creek, and started hiking up the other side. Ray and I mounted up, and my first good crank produced this:

Apparently, a couple chainring bolts had vibrated out, and I got a taco without cheese.

I walked back up Virginia Mill and Francis rescued me up on Star Hill Road.

On the way I banked some major karma though. We had passed another group on the way down, one of whom had a majorly tacoed front wheel. When I met up with them in the creek, I offered my perfectly good front wheel so at least one of us could ride out. It turns out that it was his birthday. Happy birthday.

Did you clean that drop off-ish section coming...Biking Viking

...from the west (South Leaf side)?

That's impressive on a rigid bike. I walk that.

Nice new toy.

And rigid makes the technical stuff easier, not harder.

I was pretty surprised. I went a little slower on really bumpy sections, but there aren't that many. Even Manzanita wasn't too bad. I just spent a few more cycles picking a line.

The fast fireroads with big ruts get pretty interesting though. You just have to hang the hell on. It was all we had back in the beginning.
Anyone got a pic of this drop? NMCraigH

Not one big dropFast Eddy

More like a section of trail with three or four 18" stair-steps, big rut on one side of the 10" wide trail, and dropoff on the other side.

There's nothing really big, but each obstacle threatens to toss you over the bars into a spot you wouldn't want to end up.

Out of our group of 8, three made it all the way down clean (Ray, Francis and me).

You should patent it.

I'm totally jealous. Busy saving up for a Rock Lobster SS frame from my good buds @ Sinagua Cycles. I am SO through with this beater frame I'm using as a converted SS.

How's the 2-speed thing work for you? I've been thinking about doing something similar for a beater-commuter. Does the chainline get crazy? From your photos further down, it appears your chainline MAY have been partially to blame for your bent chainring. What do you think?

When I ride in the big ring, the line is out by 5mm, but it's a derailler chain, and it works perfectly. In the small ring, the line is perfect. The bend was due to 2 bolts missing and 200lbs torquing on an aluminum ring.
Hurricane has a 2 spd as well...CraigH

but I think he is using a chain tensioner to make up the difference.

Using an old rear derailleur as a tensioner on a 2spd. manual-shift ala Bontrager

Works like a charm...not that I'm really sure how a charm works.
So, this means U & JFR will shuttle Toad's again?Finch Platte

Two things...Fast Eddy
Jun 21, 2002 8:37 AM
...first, I may be dumb, but I'm not dumb enough to ride a rigid singlespeed around tahoe. There's something like 0.01% of the normal oxygen content up there.

Second, Steve says on the gathering page that we're shuttling it. Who am I to argue.

Third (ok, three things), I'll ride it at downieville if you'll ride ole faithful. Beautiful post there, BTW.
