| Epic Henry Coe SP Ride and Micro-gathering | Fast Eddy Aug 29, 2002 1:50 PM | | 6:30am start, Saturday (sorry FP) September 21. Coe Park Website
PaulJ, Uncle Brian, myself, CanadianDave, and maybe Derek of builtmyownsinglespeed fame are signed up so far. The route, including maps of most of it, is below. It will be over 60 miles, over 10000' of climbing and will take (me) approximately 12 hours. Swimming holes will be provided at mm 40 and 50.
Legal disclaimer:
No whiners allowed! There is no bailout point after the first half of the ride. Even then, the bailout involves a 1200' climb. There is no cellphone service, and no vehicular access. You could die out there. Don't say I didn't warn you. If you "think" you "might" be able to make it, you likely can't.
There is water along the route, and the Coe HQ is about 1/4 of the way through where they have Gatorade and Powerbars and stuff for sale. Bring a water filter, and purification tablets in case your filter craps out.
The route is a giant loop that includes a substantial amount of the best ridable singletrack in the park. Most of the climbing is in the first 2/3rds of the ride. There are a couple fire road climbs that would make Lance say, "wow, that climb was a bitch".
Sept 21 is the night of the full-moon, just in case anyone rides really slow.

| That's different. | Biking Viking Aug 29, 2002 2:28 PM | | I risk puncturing a lung, rupturing the Brachial artery or simply litteraly screwing up my collar bone for a long time if I fall off the bike.
In addition, I'll be climbing like a freerider after six weeks off the bike.

| AZ Labor Day Weekend Epic | pedalAZ Aug 29, 2002 2:21 PM | | How about 200 miles over 3 days, and 29,000 ft of climbing?
Here's a link to the ride description and route maps. Troy Marino is the Uberstud putting it together.

| That's just wrong. I'm going to use the disclaimer though. | Fast Eddy Aug 29, 2002 2:30 PM | |
I, __________________________, have decided that today (Sept 21, 2002) that I am complete, beautiful, and insane. I am going to do a crazy all-day ride with a group of beings that are the same.
I am not obligated to participate or to finish. I am responsible for my safety.
The trails I am about to ride are dangerous. I will ride in remote areas that have limited access. I may get left behind. I may get lost. I may get injured or I may die. There are no provisions for rescue or first aid. I will not hold anyone else responsible for my actions or safety.
I have read, understood, and agree to this document:
Date:
Do you need ropes for this section, or what?

| ±500 ft/mi for a little over 4 miles | pedalAZ Aug 29, 2002 2:40 PM | | OK, so that's a pretty good gradient to hold for 4 miles, especially considering it will be HOT. How about day 3? 60+ miles of downhill! Wooooeeeeee.
The disclaimer is great, isn't it? |
| Not that bad. We have paved roads around here that do that (nm) | Biking Viking Aug 29, 2002 2:41 PM | | |
| Oh yeah, that thing | Paul B Aug 29, 2002 2:46 PM | | Sounds awesome. Last death march I did with Troy, the weekend before the Old Pueblo race, ended in disaster for me (a massive gouge out of my shin that took months to heal). He's one of the high priests of the singlespeed cult in Flagstaff. Scary fast, virtually impossible to hang with (unless you're a fellow cultist of the highest order).

| Sorry but.... | Gnarly1 Aug 29, 2002 4:12 PM | | I'll be heading up to BrianHead Utah to ride some sweet mountain single track with a bunch of Arizona (and one New Mexico) cronies.
I'm so ready to go -- Is it time to leave yet?!?!? |
| Too tame for me (nm) | Spiff Aug 29, 2002 2:22 PM | | sem mensagem |
| I'm in, but to SS or not? | derek Aug 29, 2002 2:46 PM | | I may have to use gears because the last 10k ride at Coe nearly killed me. Albeit I think that they chose the hardest climbs for that ride. I'm just glad your map doesn't have a climb up Spike Jones or Lyman-Wilson.
-Derek |
| If you have to ask, I wouldn't. | Fast Eddy Aug 29, 2002 3:13 PM | | The first climb has a section that climbs 1200' in a mile. I assume you've been on Jackson Trail from Anza to the top? From the top, you'd be ok until Poverty Flat Road up to Jackass Pass. I've only cleaned this fire road climb a few times in 22:34 granny gear.
I've never been up Bear Mtn. Road, but I hear it's a bitch, and that will be after 6000' and 35ish miles of other riding.
If you SS, and you end up walking, I'm sure I'll be willing to keep you company. |
| About that disclaimer.... | Zonic Man Aug 30, 2002 8:18 AM | | Could Suzy and I make it?
I know you rode with her at tahoe, so you know how she rides. |
