Going Postal(17 posts)

Going PostalAK Ken
Sep 7, 2002 7:38 PM
Did the 38 mile round trip ride to the post office today, and snapped a few pics along the way. The only off road biking was when I didn't pay enough attention to where I was going, so if it's MTB or nothing, read no further.

Temp was in the upper 40s, intermittent showers, not much wind. Colors are starting to change.

We're looking south, up the Nenana River.

Continuing upstream, we cross through the Alaska Range from north to south. That guardrail is wide enough for some of you North Shore types to ride.

The Nenana River turns left after we break through the range, and we parallel the Jack River the rest of the way to the P.O.

The mail was anticlimactic at best, so we turn around and follow the water from whence we came.

My Post box is only 10 miles round trip, but much less scenic and prob'ly alot more dangerous due to errant autos.

Also having never been to Road bike review, I would say that these photos stand up to anything I've seen posted on this forum so keep em comin'...

Between your photos and Red-Haze video, I don't need no stinking T.V. to enjoy my shift....

I do hope that someone posts some of the Downieville action soon.

or something you're supposed to glance at once in awhile? =)

Nice to know you're not asleep at the switch, anyway. Don't know how you do nites and then switch back to a normal schedule for weekends; I always had trouble with that transition.

Didn't get the dog out today, so we're off for a ride around the neighborhood before it gets DARK.

I'll check on ya when I get back!

I stare at five monitors plus MTBr.

I transition back and forth by riding when I wake up...

Have a good dog run.

got her heart rate up. Listening to the rhythm of the falling rain on the roof now.

What hours are your shifts? Days are okay, graveyards are okay, but I always HATED swing shift. When on midnites I'd get off work at 0800 and stay up all day riding (motorsickle back then), go to bed about 5 pm, then get up in time for work. Working 4 to midnite I'd stay up a couple hours or more after work, then sleep till it was almost time to go to work, and never have any daylite fun time.

The WORST though was when I was the fill in guy for other people's days off and I worked all three shifts in a week. Never knew if I was coming or going.

Ken
I work the Dow Sched.....Battman42

the shifts are 6 to 6 am or Pm.

it looks like this.

Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon,Nites

Fri,Sat, Sun,Days Tues, Weds, Thurs,nites

Mon, Tues, Weds, Thurs, Days

One week off then start again.

14 12 hr shifts 168 every 28 days.

It is only confusing if you try to interact with people on "normal" Shifts...

Get it while you can, eh?

Thank you- I love seeing that countryside. Never knew Arkansas was that pretty, being so close to Canada, and all that.

Er...thanks, I thinkAK Ken

The Arkansas I live in is nowhere near Canada. Just watch the weather some nite on TV, we're right off the coast of California next to Hawaya!

Your commute post inspired me to do this one, as this is the same as my work commute, except I don't have to leave home at 0430.

How is the fishing there? And how is the hunting? it looks like I am missing alot living in the lower 48. Jeff
Didn't see a single fishAK Ken

or anything to shoot at the whole day. Quite sure I could have seen Dall sheep if I'd have stopped and glassed, both in and out of the national park (Nenana River is the boundary for Denali National Park).

In reality, hunting is extremely regulated and controversial here, with subsistence being a huge issue. Moose and caribou populations are low, predator (grizzly and wolf) populations are high, and the train and cars kill several hundred moose every year. Times are tough. Access is difficult (both legally and physically).

Not to be discouraging, but it truly may be better hunting and fishing where you live now.

Beautiful shots! What the heck do you do in the winter there? Sounds like you are pretty remote and liable to be snowed in a goodly amount of the time. Got a snowboard and a lift nearby? :)
Have board, doan need no steenkeeng liftsAK Ken
Sep 9, 2002 6:06 AM
Got 3 snowmachines though. We sometimes use them as lifts to ski and board in the back yard.
