How did the Coe Epic go? It must have been hotter than hell.

Yup, it was hot.Fast Eddy

Full report tomorrow, but the climb up Bear Mtn was brutally hot, and brutally steep. It took us about an hour and a half to go 2.7 miles. We were down to one water filter by then, and its owner was deliriously talking about turning back. We talked/gu'ed him out of it.

Four riders out of six finished 57 miles and 915 deca-feet of climbing at about 9:15, by the light of the silvery moon. We would've finished about 45 minutes earlier, but the only two flats of the day came toward the end, one in the dark.
Ouch...fourarm

That had to hurt. Assuming you started at 6:30 that is being out there for 14 hours. Dividing that by 57 miles gives an average speed of around 4mph. Considering that you can hit 50mph on some of the downhills at Coe, that makes it sound even more painful.

Can't wait to see pics and more descriptions.

...PaulJ would've finished the whole ride in about 8 hours if he didn't have to wait for the rest of us.

Hey BV,

I'll spare you most of the details until Fast Eddy posts with some pictures and a full ride recap, but let me just say a collective HOLY CRAP for all of us. If you've ever ridden Coe, you know what I mean. I was doing alright until mile 27 when the quad cramps kicked in. Within a few miles, they got exponentially worse and I made the decision to abort the ride, but still had to climb a few thousand feet to get out of there. Thankfully, Derek took a detour with me to make sure I made it back. It was 95º and much of the ride was exposed sun. (Derek, Sean said they never met up with you after that. Are you okay?) Even with my early bailout, I covered 35 miles and 6700 feet of climbing. That's a record for me. The rest of the guys did roughly 57 miles with 9100 feet of elevation. Lunatics.
I made it out before the rest of them.derek

After you turned off to the cars I went up Coit Road (it was 96 deg on my computer) and went for a swim in Kelly Lake. Unfortunately I wasn't familiary with Kelly Lake Road so I went up it. That was a mistake, I think it went up around 800 feet in a mile. I hung out at the rendezvous point and when then didn't show up I dropped down Tule Pond Trail and out Grizzly Gulch.

I think I got the best ride out of everyone. No killer hike-a-bikes and some good singletrack. End results for me: 45 miles and 9000 feet of climbing.

When I finally got into cell phone range and called my wife, she was on the other line with the Sheriff. Note to self, get the phone numbers of the other others in the group.

It was kinda cool seeing the moon set in the mornning and rise in the evening.

I'll post the ride profile from my computer tonight, but for most of the Bear Mt. death-climb, the temp was over 105. I've never been so cooked in my entire life.

Thanks to Fast Eddy for hanging back with me and getting me up that hill. Fast and cool Eddy is.

Yea, that makes two of us.Fast Eddy

Paul was actually brave enough, after hearing how pissed my wife was over the phone, to come by and eat taco bell food at my place. He probably saved me from a whoopin'.
