Picture day today eh? Coe Epic - Part II - SingletrackFast Eddy

Part I of the Epic started at the bottom right of the aerial picture at Coyote Hot Springs. It went up Jackson Ridge, down Domino Pond and other singletrack, across Mahoney Ridge, down to China Hole, and up Pine Ridge to the Henry Coe HQ.

I was more successful at keeping up with the group, and getting time to take some photos on the singletrack on Middle Ridge. This leg of the ride went down Middle Ridge to Poverty Flat, up the grueling Jackass Pass, and down the other side. In terms of miles this part was pretty short, just about 10 miles.

Derek and I were in the back, so he's in a couple of the pictures.

Right about 11am. Still feeling pretty good after 4k' of climbing and 20 miles.

Sean is coming to tell us that Kyle has a cramp. The start of bad things to come. The guy in the yellow is one of about 6 other people we saw on the trail the whole day.

At the beginning of the climb up Jackass Pass, we waited for a while before going back to check on Kyle. He had a bad cramp and wasn't going on.

Poverty Flat is not the place to have a cramp. There are six trails out of there heading towards a park entrance, and all of them climb over 1500'. It is a hole.

Derek and I argued for just a second about who would go back with Kyle. He wanted to go it alone, but we (mostly Derek) wouldn't have it. We agreed on a meeting place further into the park where we wouldn't end up meeting later. This was at 2pm, and Derek ended up waiting for us until 7pm. We passed the meeting place around 8:15.

This was the last I saw of Derek as he rode back down Jackass:

End of Part IIFast Eddy

At the rest stop at the bottom of Middle Ridge, in the (dry) west fork of the Coyote Creek, we decided to skip part of the planned ride. The plan was originally to climb all the way to the top of Mt. Sizer and come down Rock House Ridge. It would be an extra 1500' hike-a-bike for an extra 2000' primitive downhill singletrack. I've never done it, but when everyone else voted to skip it, it sounded like a good idea.

This picture is the end of the trail down Rock House Ridge, where it dumps out into Miller Field. That's Bear Mtn. Rd. there on the right, leading towards Part III, where the going gets tough. Stay tuned...
