Seven guys, seven bikes and some sweet trails.Biking Viking

I was the hub - only guy that everybody had ridden with before on Saturday's ride. Paul J and Fast Eddy put together a killer ride in the coastal NorCal regions. Thanks a lot both of you. It was a very good ride – the last 30 minutes were replayed on the internal VCR over and over on Saturday. Four hours after we were done, as I was doing the weekly run through Costco – there was still a big, silly grin on my face.

A bunch of Passion regulars, Passion occasionals and not-even-lurkers:

He rides that rigid singlespeed really well – both up and down. The picture further down is an isolated incident only.

when did you pick up rigid yella SS? Is that a PW?
It's a Gunnar Ruffian.Fast Eddy

I got it off the marketplace for $750 complete. The 853 steel frame and matching Kelly fork go for $900 over at harriscyclery.com.

Since the picture I quit commuting on it, dropped the gear ratio to 34:18, and now it has Tioga 2.3 DH tires on it. Other than big rides at Henry Coe, it's been my main ride since the beginning of summer.

I wish I could justify one of those new Phil Wood Ti rides...

Very nice!Roger
Nov 4, 2002 11:15 AM
how do you like the Kelley fork? I'm looking to swap out to a rigid for winter, I want a disc mt though.

Yeah the Ti is sweet, Chuck's ride is gorgeous. Brent was playfully encouraging me to get a Piss Off, but I just can't afford it or justify it, especially since my Kiss Off is only a year old. If I go through the sidewall of another rear wheel in less than 7 months, I think an EBB and rear disk may be in my future.

Nice ride, and nice crash...dOH!
I want to ask him how much...Fast Eddy

...but then I'll have him encouraging me too. How much?

Flash photography and dust do not combine well. Here's the result of shooting Derek through the cloud Ed whipped up.

Note nice X-position. Unfortunately he reconnected with the trail in a loud "THUMP!" before he chute opened fully.

The trail name suggests an association with an oriental flying aid from ancient fairytales. This seemed to be of little help Saturday.
This is trickier than it looks.Biking Viking
Nov 4, 2002 9:48 AM
The trail traverses a little spine and proceeds to drop sharply off to the right. It would be really easy if it weren't for that deep rut that runs parallel to the trail on the top. Here it got Paul's front wheel too. Having achieved awareness by witnessing Ed's spectacular launch and somewhat less spectacular landing, he bailed in time.

I rode and Ed took pictures. For entertainment purposes, it worked much better the other way.

don't you wanna murder the crash experts with this advice? those bastidges never ride hard stuff, I figure.

ANY biker worth his salt knows you break your fall, regardless of terrain, with hands, face, kneecaps, and other assorted tender esential parts. Unless you're *rt*, then you belly-skid, eheheh.

Jim (shoulder now healed) C - ready for the next crash.

The only reason I stacked was because I was drunk on Budweiser.

Thanks for the pics BV.
Just thought of some appropriate lyrics to go with that.Biking Viking

"Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,

My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,

Across the clouds I see my shadow fly

Out of the corner of my watering eye

A dream unthreatened by the morning light

Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this

Suspended animation, A state of bliss

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies

Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit"
Amazing correlation, right down to the watering eye. Classic. nmFast Eddy

Did Pete ever deliver that 'package' I sent him back with? (nm)Twilight Error®
Nov 4, 2002 2:36 PM
I said (nm) but you just had to hit the reply button anyhow. I know your type - you think that if the cat's in the box, you may as well look and see if its alive or dead. The whole point I'm trying to make here is that there may or may not be a message after I put in (nm). Until you click on the 'reply', this screen has a message AND is blank at the same time. Why play games with physics...
FOCK!Pete.
Nov 4, 2002 2:52 PM
I completely forgot about that.

I need to deliver, since I took it on the plane and risked certain arrest due to its bio-warfare appearance.
I guess he forgot to drop it by...Fast Eddy

Hey I'm glad you guys had a good time. It was a spectacular day to be out. Those trails are special. When I first put it all together, I rode them for 6 straight weekends. Fell in love with a SS bike as well.

Eddy, you trying to be the next caption contest or what?

I had a good day at Soquel. Busy day but at least everyone was going the same direction. I knew almost everyone there!! The ones I didn't recognize, I introduced myself to.

JRM, did you like Soquel?

francis
Those trails are indeed special. It was my first time there.Biking Viking

The oriental aviation mat was nothing short of arousing. It made Braille look like a fire road, IMO. We didn't get to ride the deceased tent residents.

Next time.

That was the first singletrack after we went over the hill.

I don't mind being the caption contest. I certainly deserve it.

You guys already stole my last caption contest idea:
