| South Yuba trail ride (w pix) Part 1 | wg Dec 1, 2002 1:04 AM | | No SUVs, politicians or nipples were evident during this ride. Some turkey leftovers were.
Someone earlier accused us of shuttling. All present were guilty as charged. No point in pedaling up a boring gravel road, dodging dusty caravans of hunters in their pickups and wasting valuable daylight. Many important miles of single track awaited. The pictures here are somewhat random and don't do the place justice. I spent a lot of time just riding and enjoying the trail.
Anyway, we got our act together and the day promised sunshine and some fine riding. The crew that answered Zonic Man's summons was comprised of JFR, Spiff, Fast Eddy, PaulJ, Zonic and myself.
Obligatory pre-ride fidgeting and adjusting shots

We followed the fire road for about a mile then popped into the forest. Rolling through Manzanita and pine trees. Many times there was no sound but some tires cracking an occasional stick under the pine needles. Wonderful. Grunt up some climbs and end up in a camp ground.

| South Yuba trail ride (w pix) Part 2 | wg Dec 1, 2002 1:07 AM | | Next came a short but fast road decent. Topped 42 MPH on that one. We caught up to another group of about 8 riders and we tag teamed them on a wider part of the trail for a bit as we all headed for the next part. Then we turned our attention to some wonderful, long downhill single track. Here the groups got a little mixed jockeying for position. Most of our group got in front (or so I thought) and took off. I know we left the other group behind but after maybe a mile or so I hear a "Rider to pass" request? I'm thinking "who the hell caught up to us"? The trail was too twisty/fast/fun so couldn't turn to look but found a spot where a pass was possible, motioned the rider to pass and JFR blasts by?!?. He got caught in the slow traffic. A few seconds later, he's outta sight. The man was in his element.

Much of the trail is only a foot and change wide so attention was needed on steering vs. checking out the scenery too closely. Drift too closely to one side and its a long nasty drop.
At the bottom of that climb is where I noticed my rear brake fading really badly. Almost useless. Not good. I think the line got air bubbles in it somehow. Anyway loosing a rear brake put a bit of a cramp in riding style. But we stopped for a little lunch break at the river.
Looking downstream. Crank up the temp about 20 degrees and this will be a perfect swimming hole.

Looking up-stream

JFR and Zonic. Zonic dug out a fully loaded turkey sandwich. Fresh from the prior day's feast

The bikes rested with the lady bugs (they were all over that spot)

| South Yuba trail ride (w pix) Part 3 | wg Dec 1, 2002 1:10 AM | | Sinuous, twisties. A wrong turn would be your last turn

The clarity of the river water kept amazing me

Fast Eddy working a technical up. Concentration and form are everything

Zonic Man on the same thing

Zonic's Ear and Spiff. This was an interesting, rocky part of the trail with random cement portions.

Another boring river shot. (I gotta come back here when its warmer)

Nice panorama. Shows the elevation gain from the river pics. These two shots should be next to each other. Just haven't taken the time to tinker with software. First one would be to the left.

There were only a few mechanicals. My brake and Zonic killing the top sprocket ring on Fast Eddy's bike while experimenting. The man doesn't know his own strength.

We then adjourned to the obligatory pizza joint and made nuisances of ourselves. Sorry, no pics of waitresses or other objects of oggling.
Overall a great, fun ride and no one puked turkey.

| Hmmmm | wg Dec 1, 2002 9:56 AM | | For some reason I just don't consider the Toyota as a SUV. I usually apply that label to the bigger beasts. |
