| Pics from Sat and Sun's rides | Duckman Dec 15, 2002 4:46 PM | | What a kickass weekend. Since breaking the ol right collarbone and ribs 6 weeks ago. I've been jones'n to get back out. Nothing more then some short rails/trails rides to help stay in shape up to this point. Sat. here in N Ga was cold, a bit misty, and blustery as well..with a high of 41*. We decided to do the "other direction" of the Silver Comet trails, the b4 mentioned rails to trails deal. We did a 32.5 mile in and out. This stretch was suprisingly remote as it goes thru a wildlife mgmt area, a 19 century abandoned plantation spread, as well as a 700' long train tunnel(we saw like 6 roadies the entire time). This railroad was from the 20`s and 30`s having been abondoned years ago by the defunct Seaboard system. Sorta erie as it was cloudy and dark all day from the weather. This ride will ultimately go from Atlanta to Aniston Al., which is about 100 miles or so. At the tunnel was our turn around point. So we had lunch there. Strange...theres this apparently very remote "no way into it" tunnel...and heres this trash can and potted plants at this end of it. We saw a sign from the group that maintains this stretch later on. We also crossed another bridge that was 500' across, built in 1901 that "was" bungie jumped off of..up until recently, having been made illegal. Figures..
Heres the tunnel. Heck, even had lights.
The..um..road bikes..Waynes Fuel 100 and my Moab 2. The bridge in the background is the one below later that day.
This stretch passes thru the southern most extent of the Appalachains. We passed thru countless canyons with cool patterns in the now exposed layers. Guess ya had to be there.
On this bridge heading back, we could hear..and even feel..a train a few miles away heading our way. It passed just below us going 50-60 mph a few moments after this pic. That was cool. Note layering action. Yes those are short OR gaiters. Work killer for cold and/or rain and mud.
Pic from today. Chicopee Mtn bike Park. One of the best in N Ga. Closeby is the 96 Olympic mtn bike course. This place has about 20 miles of sweet roller coaster singletrack. Figured I try my newly healed collarbone out here, since the trails drain off well(been raining forever till this weekend), and would be somewhat predictable. Finally! my new frame buildup with all my new stuff. It worked flawlessly, which was surprising. Good deal.
Wayne..not ready for the pic. Today the weather was slendid. Cool, crisp, blue sky..really nice. Finally.
This section is pretty boggy, so they have these darn bridges.
We both cleaned this crossing and afterward...only to turn left at a switchback up past that little ledge and behind the larger tree..then doing the "clipped in fallover" routine. My digicam does vids too. Wayne sorta kinda got me falling right there. Thankgod I fell to the left.:) I think that vid might get lost somehow.
Nice waterfall beyond Wayne here. Yup...we had some nice comfy benches here as well. Good weekend. |
