Short 3am ride report(3 posts)

Short 3am ride reportCook

It ain't the wheelie that's impressive, it's the fact that it took me over 25 tries to get the timing down on this self-portrait. On second thought, that's not impressive....it's moronic. If I could only train my dog to take photos, life would be so much easier! Anyway, several frozen fingers and a litany of expletives later, I finally got one salvagable pic. It was just in time to, because the malls security guard finally decided to investigate the 'lighting' coming from the underground parking garage. It's always good to have your pooch with you on such occassions.....only the most obtuse security guard believes a guy on his bike with his pooch is about to break into the mall. But still, they like to have their little powertrips, so we bailed home to thaw our fingers and paws before he got to us.

Why 3am you ask? Because everyone is tucked in bed and it's just me, my pooch, my ride, my walkman and my neighborhood! (except for the occasional security guard)

Cheers

I was trying to get a wheelie self-portrait just yesterday, and going through the same timing problems, over and over again. When I finally got an excellent shot, I had turned the camera and didn't realize there was a sapling in the way, which was now bisecting my body in the photo. Ugh!

I then rearranged the shot and tried again and again. By this point, I was frustrated and tired and having skills problems (read: I could not wheelie any more). When frustration turned to amusement, I switched the digital cam from still to video clip mode. At this point, you can hear me start the cam, run over to the bike, jump on & clip in, and wheelie into the frame just as the video buffer runs out. The funny part is hearing my breathing, fumbling, and sudden clip-in troubles out-of-frame, making me late for the video shot. Comical!

I switched back to photo mode and told myself to relax. I finally got some decent shots. (I'll post from the ride tomorrow.)

Bike self-portraits are a killer. I attempted to train other people to take my picture, and finally gave up on that. I was getting desperate enough to consider hiring a professional photographer for a ride or two. But I'm finally getting better on my own. Funny, but now I'm probably near the point where I'd be disappointed with anyone else's photos ride photos of me. :)
I finally figured out....Cook

...after about the 15th picture, that trying to get a close-up was fruitless. In the end, what worked was a wide-angled high resolution shot that I just zoomed in and clipped for the final photo.

Looking forward to your shots.

Cheers.
