Digital Sucks, Shoot Film...(25 posts)

Digital Sucks, Shoot Film...Allroy
Dec 16, 2002 6:45 AM
Camera - Holga 120S

Film - 120 Kodak T-MAX 400

No pictures were Photoshop'd in the making of this post... well I did have to scan the negatives in and resize them for the web...

This was from the ASSS ride (Avalon Slushy Single-Speed)

rideLikejehu does a drop during some DC urban action...

Before you drop the wall, you have to...

Poor birdy, it was cold and icy out...

Nothing bike related to see here...

This is what happens when you listen to me... the ride is over, starting to pack up and I go, hey Corey hits those steps again so I can get some shots! Of course the egomaniac he is never gives up a chance to be in a picture, hits the first set of stairs loud snapping sound, lands the second set of stairs crack! Cranks are flying, sharp metal bits everywhere and a very sketchy one-footed landing with no helmet. But I got a pretty kewl shot pre-breakage, cheers Corey!

Finally my piece de resis-taunce...

I had 3 or 4 more shots, but the camera back sort of came loose and fell off, one of the draw-backs of the Holga, so they ended up being a dark murky mess.

I've been so into the newest latest and greatest the past couple years I've forgotten my roots, so to say. Everyone raves about the latest and greatest... for me rigid SS and cheap medium format cameras is where it's at!

found my passion again,

-jason

Learned that you to draw the line right after sloppy tongue kisses from homeless guys.

At least we know now.

I like the B/W pics.

I'll take nicely shot B&W over razor sharp digital color any day.

I love the convenience of digital, but still love the challenge of getting a great shot using nothing but your eyes and your knowledge of the tools in your bag. Sort of like cleaning a technical section on a SS rigid vs a freeride bike. Sure you end up in the same place, but one way is much more rewarding.
No way! I was just getting ready to buy one of those....GirchyGirchy

That's crazy, an online photographer friend just introduced me to the Holga...only $16 at www.bhphoto.com , the cheapest medium-format available. Takes coolass photos too, I love the vignetting and focusing oddities. Just reinforces my decision to take the plunge.

Have you tried any 3200 speed B&W 120 film? I think Ilford makes some, that would look even cooler I think. Also, is the developing cheap on 120 film? I've never used it at all.

You should take a look at www.holgamods.com , you can order them with cable releases, bulb setting, and tripod mounts...plus it shows you how to velcro the back on (you might need that, haha :) and shoot 35mm film in it.

You're right about the 'latest and greatest' thing. I would like a digital camera for taking quick pictures for the web, but my fully manual SLR is fine for me. And black and white just shows so much emotion in prints, it's much more enjoyable. Plus it's easy to make your own prints...especially if you go use the local university's darkroom :) Plus you can make prints like the one below, where you wonder, "Where did I take that? What the heck is it? I don't remember that..."

Brian

PS - Keep submitting the Holgas, they're great! Excellent pictures.
cheap mistake, even if you don't like it...Allroy

Haven't tried the 3200 speed yet, I also want to try infrared. I used that a lot back in college.

I actually did all the same mods to my Holga like Holgamods. the only one I have to figure out is how to switch between the normal shutter speed and bulb exposure. After the camera back fell off, I velco'd the back as soon as I got home!

As for developing, it should be cheap and easy {B&W}, but it's not if you go to your normal camera shop {Ritz, etc...}. they send it out to Kodak and it takes from 7-10 days. Normal C-41 they just put through a machine and doesn't take any skill, so either get your own negative developing kit, cheap and easy or find a shop that knows what they're doing.

thanks,

-jason

I might have to get you to help me on making those mods, were they very hard? They use a little pin that pulls in and out below the lens on the Holgamods, dunno how it works though...maybe you could email the guy on some help.

I also want to try infrared, but I've been spending my time and money on the bike lately, so maybe next semester. Not colour, but B&W, since it's affordable.

I'll have to ask around the photo department here at UK I guess, there are a couple of shops I know of, but I don't trust them. Maybe they can suggest some good ones. Thanks for the tips!

IR film. Not sure?mtbbrian
Dec 16, 2002 8:35 AM
I am not too sure IR film B&W or color would work in a Holga.

IR film is very sensative(as I am sure you both know), I just don't think you would get anything.

Maybe you should post something on Photoreview.com about it.

Good luck!

bulb exposure...Allroy
Dec 16, 2002 8:47 AM
you would need to make this mod or build up your exposures, depending on lighting of course. I have a bunch of 49mm filters, so I bought a 46-49 adapter and screwed it right into the plastic Holga lense so I can mainly use my red filter for B&W also good for IR to improve contrast.

Also with IR film you have to tape up every crack on the Holga to avoid light leaks, like you said very sensitive, not to mentions load and unload it total dark.

Some thoughts...GirchyGirchy
Dec 16, 2002 12:39 PM
So 46mm is the size that screws onto the Holga lens? I have a bunch of 58mm filters, including a red (and will be ordering a 58mm fisheye attachment), so I could try a 46-58 step up. I thought of using some silicon sealant, I have some black that would work. But tape would be better if I actually wanted the light leaks later.

Steelbike's suggestions were in line with what I was looking at, specifically the Ilford IR. It's not a true IR (the Konica is a bit closer I think), it's more like B&W with extended light sensitivity, so it does not need total darkness to load in. And I'd also found that Ilford 3200 he suggested, it's pretty cheap. Boy, I can't wait to try all this crap out...

Thanks all for suggestions and such!

Brian
120 IR that you can usesteelbike

Ilford SFX200

http://www.ilford.com/html/us_english/prod_html/sfx200/sfx200.html

Ilford also makes a 3200 speed film in 120 (3200 delta 120)

Konica Infrared 750 Black & White film

Cachet Macophot IR 820c 120 Infrared Film - you can get this at calumetphoto.com. (I don't work for Calumet)

Any of these will work for you as they aren't true IR films that would be sensitive to fogging in your Holga. Black tape works for covering those light leaks.

Great shots by the way!

wow! now i want one too! great job on the pics, man. you're right, snapping that bb is WELL worth getting shots like those. i've gotta figure out if i'm going to win a crankset offa ebay or if i bite the bullet and buy a set of hussefelts from cambria.

i'm off the week after xmas, if i don't get my shizznitz together by this weekend.

rigid SS is where it's at? funny, i didn't see you taking any of those passion-inducing stair drops on the redline! a little technology never hurt anyone, just keep that tail hard!

If you're willing to break a bottom bracket for a photo, what are you willing to snap when I bring the digital camcorder along for a ride?

Carnage makes great video footage.
