So what does that make me, posting about someone who's posting somthing about someone else if they even own a bike... I guess that's why I like homeless men.

| Question for Oi Punk. . . | JS5280 Dec 16, 2002 1:24 PM | | What is Oi Punk? Does Oi have a meaning? I am a fan of punk music (e.g. Bad Religion, Descendents, Dropkick Murphy's, Circle Jerks, Ramones, Sex Pistols, ska, some of the pop-punk now is okay too) but have to admit I don't know much about the sub-genres. What's considered Oi punk? I know Oi is used in lot of songs, and I vaguely remember it having some connection to Australia but may be wrong. Always like learning more about music. . . |
| I'm pretty sure it has to do with White Supremacy... | Fat-tire Dec 16, 2002 2:12 PM | | Now why the hell do I want to stir the pot? |
| not even close, see my other post. {nm} | Allroy Dec 16, 2002 2:27 PM | | |
| I know, I was just as I said... | Fat-tire Dec 16, 2002 2:33 PM | | trying to stir the pot of a useless post (the original one). |
| I know just informing... | Allroy Dec 16, 2002 2:39 PM | | agree with the useless post. |
| However, I did find something kind of interesting on | Fat-tire Dec 16, 2002 2:41 PM | | ADL site:
Since the 1960s, when racist country music singer Johnny Rebel recorded songs such as "N--- Hatin' Me," more than 500 hate rock bands have formed worldwide. Nearly all of these groups were formed after 1982, when the late British singer, songwriter and guitarist Ian Stuart Donaldson turned his band Skrewdriver into a mouthpiece for hate. A significant number of these bands play or have played
b "Oi,"
the style of punk rock associated with Skrewdriver and other early hate rock groups. Other bands perform a racist take on other forms of punk and heavy metal. The genre known as NSBM - National Socialist Black Metal - has also become popular in recent years. |
| I know just informing... | Allroy Dec 16, 2002 2:43 PM | | agree with the useless post. |
| kinda like... | rideLIKEjehu Dec 16, 2002 2:18 PM | | ... dropkick murphys. working class british punk rawk. classic mohawks and leathers and beers.
OI OI OI!
corey |
| Oi punk........ | krank Dec 16, 2002 2:26 PM | | Some people also call it "working class" music like the Dropkick Murphy's, The Business and Blitz. |
| Oi punk........ | old Oi Punk Dec 17, 2002 5:44 AM | | Thank you, Brother Krank!! |
| sub-genres... learn your music mate! | Allroy Dec 16, 2002 2:26 PM | | especially if the suppossed music you like is in that "category."
Oi! Music, which is often described as street punk or reality punk, came into being sometime around 1978/79. By this time many of the original punk bands of '77 such as the sex Pistols and Generation X had either broken up or sold out to New Wave.
Bands such as Sham 69, Cocksparres and the Cockney Rejects, however, would show the way and breathe new life into the punk rock scene. Sham 69, with top 10 singles such as Hurry Up Harry and Hersham Boys, inspired others with their short pub-rock style of sing-along choruses and soccer terrace chants. Some of the other original Oi! Bands were the 4-Skins, Angelic Upstarts, The Last Resort, and The Business. This catchy street punk sound appealed to a broad audience of punks, skins, herberts (regular folk) and football (soccer) hooligans.
Oi! is punk without the poseurs. The oi! scene is about working-class pride, and politics with a small p. It's about having a say and having a laugh and is more concerned with what's going on in your own backyard than with what the extreme right or left have to say.
The media has at times tried to label Oi! music as hate-rock with a hard line racist following. Research would reveal, however, a lack of racist lyrics by these bands, and even multi-racial band line-ups in some cases. In fact, racist bonehead bands such as Skrewdriver maintained that they were not Oi bands, but rather just rock bands.
Today there are many bands who still carry the Oi banner such as The Templars (USA), Tension (Canada), Discoks (Japan), Oxymoron (Germany), Street Troopers (Canada) and Drop Kick Murphys (USA). |
| Awesome, have to check out those other bands. . . | JS5280 Dec 16, 2002 2:50 PM | | I'm really liking Drop Kick Murphys lately (listened to them causually for a while) and want to pick up some of their albums now. I have some MP3s of them (Amazon has a good selection of free Punk MP3 downloads). Sounds like I might like these other bands too.
I assume you're a fan of the group All juding by your handle? I listened to them a lot in college, even saw them play in Denver. It was awesome. That's about punk a concert as I've been too.

(undoubtedly a Herbert) |
| All / Descendents are one of my favs... | Allroy Dec 16, 2002 3:19 PM | | I'm not much into raw hardcore punk kinda music, I go for more melodic groups. I met those guys when I was in Ft. Collins, I just called them up and asked if I could take a tour of the studio and Bill Stevens {formerly of Black Flag} was like yeah sure swing by around this time we have another band recording but could use a break. The other band was The Pavers one of the ex-singers of Descendents is the lead singer. They introduced us, gave us a tour and a beer and a bunch of stickers, very awesome!
I'm a fan for life, never forget where you came from, unlike most of today's bands.
This turned out to be much better then the original posters post!

| That's cool, what was the Ft. Collins connection for All? | JS5280 Dec 16, 2002 5:30 PM | | I heard they were up at Ft. Fun (this was early 90's, going to school in Boulder, still live in Denver), but I thought the Descendents were a CA band, or at least discovered there. Cool you had a chance to meet them. |
| Owned & Operated... | Allroy Dec 17, 2002 5:30 AM | | which is Bill Stevens record label is based out of Ft. Collins. Yeah the Descendents were started back in the day in Cali. |
| Error in Oi primer........... | Skitz02 Dec 16, 2002 4:40 PM | | Technically a Herbert is a Proper Skin who's let their hair grow out (to a normal length)
And a 'Proper Skin' is a Fred Perry or Bomber wearin Moonstompin Rude Boy who is NOT RACIST!
nitpicker, am I.
A.C.A.B! |
| Question for Oi Punk. . . | old Oi Punk Dec 17, 2002 5:42 AM | | Oi is a sub-genre of punk, it is different in that its origins were in the beer-swilling punk bars of merry old England, the songs tend to be of the "sing-along' style of lyrics, bands such as the Business and Oi Polloi are my favorites, both are very old school. It falls into the category of :Hardcore" punk. I may not be totally accurate, but that is my take on the subject! P.S. I am NOT a booze drinker, I just like this style of punk! |
| The answer is (insert drum roll) ........ | MRfire - 1 Dec 16, 2002 1:59 PM | | YES. And I own two bikes (Giant NRS, GT LTS) and have a junkyard full of parts in my garage to boot. I am an IMBA and CAMBA member and live two minutes from the new Cleveland Ski Club trail (which I helped build along with IMBA,CAMBA and Lake Metroparks). I frequent this site because:
1. I learn a lot
2. I like bikes
3. I like to be entertained
4. I like to entertain (wether it be getting a rise out of shmo's like yourself)
5. Cool pictures
6. I've bought many things from classifieds (including my NRS frame)
And I know you are all waiting in anticipation for some spectacular North East Ohio ride pics. Well good news - I've heard from a friend that heard from a friend that heard from my girlfriend that I have a Canon S30 coming for Christmas. MRfire shall be revealed soon (and yes I'll show my nipples - lady riders look out =) Call it my New Years Resolution if you will.
BTW...I've posted my bike pics on this site before (they were scanned), you have to search a little farther back on all forums.

| I stand corrected, apologies to MRFire...... | old Oi Punk Dec 17, 2002 6:12 AM | | ...a lot of you are right, the "what is Oi" question is a LOT more interesting than what I originally posted! Fat-Tire, bro' you are SO wrong in your assumption that Oi is a racist genre, but my assumption about MRFire was misguided, too! Allroy,,you got it right! Oi Polloi is VERY anti-racist, and they areone of my favorites, though I don't agree too much with their Anti-Police stance! NOT ALL cops are bad as they imply! MRFire, sorry dude, I just never noticed any Mt. Bike content in your postings, and some of them seemed to be mean, pot-stirring rants! But, we all have our opinions, I know I do!SORRY, again, i was definitely in a raunchy mood when I did that post! Anyway, all those who need to know what Oi is, read Allroy's post! Thanks for listening!! Happy Trails! Jeff |
| No Problemo | MRfire - 1 Dec 17, 2002 11:05 AM | | we're all different, but then again the same. Peace. |
| No, really......... | old Oi Punk Dec 17, 2002 1:25 PM | | ......I ask myself" Where did that come from, and WHY!" I tell my second graders "If you can't say anything nice to someone, don't say anything at all!" I think I was in a raunchy mood after talking to an "Anti-Teacher" type of father of one of my students, and as a teacher, I can't defend myself like I would like( maybe that is a GOOD thing!;) ). Anyway, peace Mt. Bikin' Bro!!!! |
