May 5, 2003 8:09 AM | | Well, I'm happy to report that Sunday at Annadel was a good ride. Probably not quite as muddy as it was for the Friday riders, but it was still pretty wet. We were supposed to have 7 or 8 riders, but most bailed out. Eric (moshika) and I agreed to meet at Howarth Park @10:30. We were met by Pete (the husband of a friend of mine from work) and Fritz from Marin Bikes (a neighbor from down the street). None of us had ridden together before, so we didn't know what we were in for.
We took the trails out of Howarth as a warm up and headed into Annadel. We knew Canyon was closed, so we went up Rough Go instead. At the top of Rough Go we ran into a guy with a map in his hand, looking lost. I asked where he was headed and he said he didn't know but wanted to end up near Lawndale. We were kind of headed that direction, so we asked if he wanted to tag along. So Josh from somewhere near Santa Cruz joined up. The five of us did the muddy South Burma climb, then went up toward the marsh, and headed over to Lawndale. That's when it started to rain. It was more than just a sprinkle, but it didn't last long so we just kept riding.
Fritz knew this part of the park better than the rest of us, so he led us up and over to the power lines where he knew of a tiny twisty single track that only Eric had been on, but was unable to find later.
What a Kick in the pants. It was narrow, tight, steep and fun darting in and out of the trees. I banged my shoulder pretty hard, going around one tree while setting up to go around another. What a blast!
We popped out of there and back onto Lawndale. Instead of heading back up, we decided to head back towards the parking lot so Josh could
get to a wedding (not his, I hope, because he was a muddy mess).
All in all a successful ride. Not as many people as we had hoped, but a whole bunch of fun nonetheless. I am really looking forward to attending one of the larger gatherings in the future! |
