| Tinker Humbles 'Em at 12 Hours of Humboldt | Bigfoot Jul 1, 2003 7:58 AM | | Saturday's 12 Hours of Humboldt was a buncha fun! We had perfect weather (72 degrees) for 121 racers hanging out on the lawn of Redwood Park. We went through 12 cases of water (thanks Calistoga), 150 burger buns, a buncha turkey burger & beef patties, a few kettles of baked beans, one kettle of corn and one keg of Bigfoot Pale Ale (thanks Mad River Brewery).
For the second year in a row, the overall was won by a 4-rider singlespeed team! Team 8 Legs "enjoyed" 15 laps of the course, beating the next team of gearies by some 15 minutes, and beating Tinker's 2-rider team by 25 minutes.
Under the giant redwoods of the Arcata Community Forest, Tinker Juarez, Siemens / Cannondale endurance specialist, and local veteran expert racer Anthony Kahn, rode to victory in the 2-rider pro class.
Kahn, a 48 year old furniture maker, had won the "Team Up With Tinker Raffle," held to raise money to purchase a 171-acre addition to the Arcata Community Forest. With Tinker's 11 laps, and Kahn's 4 laps, the duo dominated the 2-rider ranks and equaled the mileage of the winning 4-rider team.
"That's one of the best courses I've ridden in a long time," Tinker said of the 8.75-mile course that featured 1650 feet of climbing per lap, "And definitely the prettiest," he added, "Some good long climbs, great singletrackit had everything." |
| The smile tells it all | Bigfoot Jul 1, 2003 8:05 AM | | (LEFT) Was it fun? Womens winner Karen Williams seems to think so. Karen did 10 laps. When was the last time YOU did 87.5 miles and 16,500 feet of climbing in one day?
(RIGHT) Riders listen intently at the riders meeting. Some of Redwood Park is visible...what a great venue. That's Vic (Chief Executive Sasquatch) instructing the troops on the day's rules and such. |
| Even the sponsors ride! | Bigfoot Jul 1, 2003 8:13 AM | | Chris Carrol (left) owns a local surveying company and is a sponsor of all of Team Bigfoot's events.
Curtis Ingles (right) from Clif Bar, made sure that all the racers had enough bars and Clif Shots to get 'em through the day. Curtis chose an interesting red "skinsuit" to ward of the morning chill of the first lap. |
| Purty or what???!!! | Bigfoot Jul 1, 2003 8:18 AM | | Typical Humboldt County trail. Yeah, we got it tough up here. Local rider Dan Goldsmith here teamed up with local woman Kristen Aldrich to win the 2-Rider Mixed Expert class. |
| "Facial tick afflicts racers in NorCal. Film at Eleven!" | Bigfoot Jul 1, 2003 8:25 AM | | Some mysterious malady spread its way through the ranks of a mountain bike race this weekend. Sufferers shared a common symptom...the corners or their mouths would curl up, causing the poor racer to bare his or her teeth. Continued laps of the course only seemed to worsen the condition, as did post-race administering of BBQ and medicinal doses of Bigfoot Pale Ale. In hopes of finding a cure, some racers tried repeated doses of ale, but sadly, with no results. We can only hope that within the next few days, those suffering will have their syptoms subside. |
| Looks awful nice up there. Thanks for the post. nm | pedalAZ Jul 1, 2003 9:23 AM | | |
