| ISO: friendly and/or nice things Pete has ever said... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 7:16 AM | | Hey all,
This isn't intended to be a slag fest on Pete so let's keep it polite.
I'm just looking for incidences of friendliness (sp?) or nice things that Pete has had to say about people for two main reasons (a) I'm honestly curious and (b) I'd like to counteract this increasingly negative view of him I have with some more balanced info. I really like his bike videos, they're great, but I don't like watching things if I don't like where they come from.
I know I've said and done some stupid things sometimes, but it seems that once Pete blacklists you that's it. Sometimes, like others on this board, I've posted under assumed names for humours sake but never to bolster a product review or something of that nature. Can I ever escape the wrath of Mr. Fagerlin or am I lame for life? Has Pete slowly soured over the years or is he the same sweet guy he's always been?
Regards,
The Rear Admiral

| 10 Reasons Why Warren Zevon Was Cool | imjps Sep 10, 2003 11:28 AM | | 10 Reasons Why Warren Zevon Was Cool
Monday September 08, 2003 @ 05:30 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff
Here's our list of the Top 10 Reasons Why Warren Zevon Was Cool:
1. After discovering that he had inoperable cancer last year, Zevon got to work on own musical epitaph. His final album, The Wind, was released two weeks ago and featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Billy Bob Thornton, Jackson Browne and many others. The album included a particularly haunting version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and ended with a moving acoustic ballad called "Keep Me In Your Heart."
2. He was good buddies with Hunter S. Thompson since they both loved to party to the extreme in their youth. Once Zevon got all that out of his system he sought out alcoholism treatment and had been sober for nearly 18 years.
3. When Zevon found out that he had cancer, David Letterman did a special show just for him. Letterman asked him how he was dealing with the fact that he was going to die, he simply said that he "would enjoy every sandwich."
4. How many singers got to use R.E.M. as their backing band? The band and Zevon did a record under the name Hindu Love Gods in which they covered Prince's "Rasberry Beret." They were also his backing band on his 1987 album Sentimental Hygiene.
5. Wrote the nastiest song about the South ever (yes, nastier than "Southern Man") with "Play It All Night Long" (from his Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School record in 1980). Opening Line: "Grandpa's pissed his pants again/He don't give a damn/Brother Billy's got both guns drawn/He ain't been right since Vietnam."
6. Hollywood directors love to steal Zevon titles for their movies. Examples: "Thing To Do In Denver When You're Dead" and the recent "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead."
7. He wrote the best song about Elvis Presley and the entrapment of big time fame. "Porcelain Monkey" from Life'll Kill Ya features the chorus "He threw it away for a porcelain monkey/Gave it all up for a figurine/He traded it in for a night in Las Vegas/And his face on velveteen."
8. Zevon was perhaps the only singer-songwriter that got stuck with the burden of one hit tune ("Werewolves Of London") and managed to laugh about it. Zevon appeared on the Larry Sanders show as himself and pleaded with the producer Artie to play anything but "Werewolves." Artie lets him do "The French Inhaler" (from his debut album). However, when he finished, Larry leaned over in true "I don't have a clue" style and asks if Warren would play "that Werewolves In London" song. The look on Zevon's face said it all. Priceless.
9. He was probably the only reason that David Letterman would ever end up singing on a record. Letterman sang back up vocals on Zevon's "Hit Somebody" from his 2001 album My Ride's Here.
10. But best of all, he never took no shit from anyone. |

From having been part of MANY online "forums" since 1992, I learned 1 thing. Majority of people carry out their ways differently in their "real life" Vs. their protected "online life." I know I myself can come across very differently online than I am in real life (mostly with new net-friends). When you meet or talk to someone online, you can't read the body posture or gestures. Using ;) or :P only goes so far...
I've never met Pete, but I know he is into photography, likes sports cars and rides bikes...no matter what I may think of him "online," I'm sure we would get along in real life. Hell, if he is into restoring muscle cars from the 60's, I may ask him to marry me (LOL). |

Which is from Orange, California.
My message has this in the source:
Which whois says falls under Bell Canada.
Then again I suppose I just could've just telnet or ssh into a box in Cali, fire up lynx and browsed from there. But I'm guessing you're just doing this to get a rise out me now, so I hope I've proved entertaining. At least someone got something out of this. |
| OK, I guess those tags didn't show up... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 8:35 AM | | ... 'slowSSer' has an IP 216.237.11.250 in his message and I have 209.226.67.168. You could always view the page source of the previous message in case you suspect I'm lying about having pasted in the IPs for some reason. Oh well, next time I'll try to escape comment tags properly, if only I can remember how... |
| um, what I do? | slowSSer Sep 10, 2003 9:20 AM | | and why am i getting dragged into this?

| Pete, for some reason, said I was faking another identity... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 10:38 AM | | ...and that I was you. This, mind you, from the simple fact that I posted a rather odd message after a post you made. God forbid he admits he was wrong and that we are two different people, but I digress. |
| Try again. | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 10:45 AM | | I tried to steer you in the right direction, but it appears you will take the path of most resistance (same as every other mpd poster).

I'm off, don't say I didn't try to help. |
| Dude, check your facts | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 10:56 AM | | ... if you look back, the title of the post that started this issue, further down the page (search on "rock 'n roll" and/or "noise pollution") you'll see that the title of the post was "Doctors can help with your multiple personality disorder." and the comment, contained inside the post, was "Time for another psuedonym lameass"
I don't think that by any means clearly implies that I was responding to myself inside of the same post. The implication is there, quite clearly in my opinion, that I was using a pseudonym when replying to a previous messages, in particular this one:
aint noise pollution... (nm) slowSSer 9/9/03 12:41 PM
Hopefully by this point it can be agreed upon that I am not 'slowSSer'.
You know, sometimes Pete is wrong, regardless of how much of an ass people I've made out of myself. I just don't think that I deserved the whole 'lameass' and pseudonym accusation in this case. |

| Is it really that hard for you two to understand? | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 11:19 AM | | ...in the case being referred to, I was NOT using multiple handles. Why Pete ever confused me with 'slowSSe'r I do not know. Is it that hard to understand? Look at the posts, look at the IPs, we're not the same people. |

| Axshully, | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 11:30 AM | | I think I may have put our feet in my mouth. I thought you were the Marky Mark dude down there talking to yourself.
My humble apologies (MM's too). |
| No worries... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 11:33 AM | | ...it's not like I'm doing too well here myself! Exactly how one withdraws gracefully from something like this mess I've created I'm not sure. Part of me wants to just shutup and stop posting, but the other half that wants to kick Pete in the nuts has the upper hand at the moment. I'll come to my senses, or at least better senses, at some point. |
| You seem a little quiet now... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 1:33 PM | | Perhaps 'cos you finally understand that I'm not 'slowSSer' or 'markie markk'? I guess it would be too much to expect some kind of acknowledgement, however limited or insincere it might be, eh?
Oh well. |
| Sorry spaz, went to lunch. | Pete. Sep 10, 2003 1:39 PM | | Lovely Thai food to be precise.
Where did I ever claim that you were that other idiot "markie markk"?
Here's your acknoledgement:
You're an idiot.
How's that for validation?
Cheers! |
| Try again Pete | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 4:12 PM | | Here's a couple:
"increasingly negative view of him" That's funny "slowSSer" or [Pete. Sep-10-03, 09:10 AM] "...whatever your current handle is." Pete. 9/10/03 9:10am
"Doctors can help with your multiple personality disorder." [Pete. 9/9/03 02:10 PM] "Time for another psuedonym lameass." Pete. "rock" 9/9/03 2:10pm
And pay attention to the whole thread so that you get the write context. I understand that you might not know that word, so here's a link: Merriam-Webster online dictionary
Now, if this were a court case or something where procedural and linquistic minutiae make huge differences, I'm sure you could find some clever way to weasle out of this and say something to the effect of "See, I never technically said you were that idiot 'markie markk'".
But the point remains that a reasonable person could conclude that you, at multiple points, were of the opinion that I was someone other than who I was representing to be. 'Drewpy' did the same thing. As a result of this confusion, you capped on me more than I think I deserved. But oh well, time to grow a thicker skin I guess.
I would prefer to be attacked for my own idiocy and no one elses, thank you very much. At least have the wherewithal and brains to not assume I'm someone else without checking first. But then again, that wouldn't be fun for Mr. Fagerlin, would it? |
| Hey spaz, you're still fantasizing. | Pete. Sep 10, 2003 4:23 PM | | Where did I ever claim that you were that other idiot marky markk?
(hint since you're obviously flailing so much that you've lost a bit of short-term memory: Someone else in this thread linked you and the other idiot)
"you capped on me more than I think I deserved."
Are you this much of a raving pansy in real life or is this just a schtick that you use on the 'net to make yourself look even more foolish?
"I would prefer to be attacked for my own idiocy "
Wishes do come true, as you can see by reading this thread. |
| Can't you do better than name calling? | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 5:10 PM | | If you ask me, which you didn't, your use of names doesn't exactly allude to you being such a fantastic specimen yourself, you know. But whatever, name calling is weak. At least my 'whining' isn't canned words.
And where did you have a problem understanding what I posted before?
>Where did I ever claim that you were that other idiot marky markk?
Pete. 9/10/03 9:10am
""increasingly negative view of him" That's funny "slowSSer" or"
...whatever your current handle is.
I thought it was pretty clear that given the very recent textual altercation between you and 'markie markk' that your insuation of " That's funny slowSSer or whatever your current handle is" was probably, and at least could be reasonably assumed, to be referring to the same person. The person in question being 'markie markk'. But I'm gonna guess that you would never agree to that point as it might actually give me a leg to stand on. And what fun would that be when you can keep on name calling?
Now you'll remember this thread, no doubt: markie markk "Downieville Classic - some serious probs here..." 9/10/03 3:24pm
That is the start of the whole Pete vs. markie markk thing, I guess.
And what is wrong with being a pansy? Is there something wrong with appearing to posses qualities that lend oneself to being compared to gay people, vis a vis the use of the word 'pansy'? At least stick to the 'whiner' tag instead of using a homosexual epithet that is in poor taste.
In any case, you could be perceived as being just as pathetic as I am considering that you're right here, chatting along with me. Since a person can be judged by the company they keep, and as we certainly don't seem to like each other and would prefer not to be associated with each other, how about we never talk to each other again? |
| "spaz" = incredibly apt description. | Pete. Sep 10, 2003 5:53 PM | | "I thought it was pretty clear that given the very recent textual altercation between you and 'markie markk' that your insuation of " That's funny slowSSer or whatever your current handle is" was probably, and at least could be reasonably assumed, to be referring to the same person."
ROTFLMAO!
"pretty clear"!!!!!!!!
Again, spaz, where did I ever claim that you were the other idiot, marky markk?
"But I'm gonna guess that you would never agree to that point as it might actually give me a leg to stand on."
Uh, no it wouldn't, since the whole construct is your fantasy. The fact is I never implied/claimed/wrote that you were marky markk. Sorry spaz.
"At least stick to the 'whiner' tag instead of using a homosexual epithet that is in poor taste."
Oh please you pansy whiner. What a riot you've turned out to be. Not only are you a dime-a-dozen OS geek, you're apparently terminally fragile, with a good dose of cluelessness. What a fantastic combo!
"Since a person can be judged by the company they keep, and as we certainly don't seem to like each other and would prefer not to be associated with each other, how about we never talk to each other again?"
Just when I think you can't get any more pathetic, you come up with this.
Good job spaz! |
| Funny how I pretty much called what you were going to do... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 6:11 PM | | ...before you did it. You're pretty predictable, Pete.
God I'm glad I'm not your kids (if they really are yours that is)! Any attempt to withdraw gracefully from a confrontation is to be mocked and proof of further patheticness. |
| Ah, the "kids" card is played for real. | Pete. Sep 10, 2003 6:41 PM | | Too funny spaz.
Your idiotic posts just beg for mocking.
I'm happy to oblige. |
| I'm just saying dude... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 6:50 PM | | What card are you referring to? For all I know the kids in your movies could be neighbours that you were taking out for a ride. Anything else you thought I implied was something that you wanted to see, but for someone that keeps using names as the thrust of their taunts, I can see how that might make for a simpler mind than some people.
So how would one withdraw gracefully from a Pete ensnarement? I suppose you would probably want the last say? Sore winner complex, perhaps? |
| Truly bizarre. | Pete. Sep 11, 2003 7:43 AM | | "What card are you referring to? For all I know the kids in your movies could be neighbours that you were taking out for a ride. Anything else you thought I implied was something that you wanted to see"
Why this one, fruitcake:
"God I'm glad I'm not your kids (if they really are yours that is)! "
"So how would one withdraw gracefully from a Pete ensnarement?"
Go buy yourself some self-confidence, get over your insecurity issues, and stop posting stupid stuff.
Easy, huh? |
| Actually, you know what | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 8:32 PM | | ..fuck it, I give. I don't have the nerve or skills to continue this. It was a mistake to have even started it. I've said things that do not represent the kind of image I wanted to hold myself to or project as a person. This thread is poison for my karma and I don't want anymore of it. |
| "I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again".. | MRfire - 1 Sep 10, 2003 8:54 AM | | Yes, it was actually written by Pete himself! |
| Awful big of him, I just wish he'd ease up on the Ad Hominem... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 9:02 AM | | ... attacks. 'Lameass' and 'fruitcake' are pretty tame I know, and I've probably called him names, but not recently that I can recall. I would have expected better of Pete than ad hominem, but everyone has their moments. |
| Another comment from me. | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 9:05 AM | | This thread will probably not help your cause.
Lidarman: Are you volunteering to run the Grimy Awards this year?
Drewpy <---notices berrywise still hasn't shown back up. |
| Oh well | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 9:11 AM | | Perhaps he enjoys the attention, I dunno. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I don't feel like apologizing for that, so when I cross that threshold where I feel like venting, I vent.
If Pete chooses to keep on having at me whenever I post, and I haven't committed any egregious offence that deserves an attack, then huzzah to him for the entertainment that comes with insulting people that aren't up to his calibre. I hope he raises his kids to be a little more tolerant when posting online though. |
| Dude, stop now. | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 9:14 AM | | If you don't want to be insulted, you may not want to bring the man's kids into this. |
| Why? | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 9:23 AM | | It's a legit comment, I'd just hate to see my future no doubt thin-skinned kids start crying or whining when they go online and get slammed the second they say something the littlest bit stupid. It's obviously no secret that perhaps I don't think as long as I should before I open my mouth and I would suspect, to my offsprings detriment, that that is one trait that will get passed down to them.
I didn't insult him or disparage his kids nor I would I say anything intended to harm to hurt them. I've never met them, don't know them, so I don't have anything against them. |

No time at all. |
| reprise: oh how witty, again | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 11:01 AM | | |
| Excellent Point! I raise my daughter by the same ethos! | silversurfer Sep 10, 2003 10:11 AM | | I raise my seven year old in a Skinner Box, so admittedly, she is a bit lacking in interpersonal skills. For those of you that have met her, obviously I do let her out on rare occasion, which admittedly is counter to the whole point of the Skinner Box, but hey, nobody's perfect. I do have to coach her (using both positive and negative reinforcement) in how to interact with "outside" people, but she knows that if she screws up I won't spare the rod.
The flip side of all this is that all of this lack of outside distractions has taught her to behave quite well online, where all real communication will take place in the future. Sure, she may be lacking in interpersonal communication skills, but she will be ahead of the cybercurve, and as we all know, how tolerantly we post online is the true judge of a man's (or seven year old girl's) soul. That, and if she flames anyone, I don't feed her.

| hmmmm....sounds kinda fun... | lidarman Sep 10, 2003 9:12 AM | | Does it happen around the start of the year? I forget. |
| Hell yeah! | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 9:17 AM | | Its nothing but fun, I tell ya.
Last year it started in mid-december and I cut the voting off 12/31. I don't remember when berrywise did it. I'll bug you again when the time comes (read: too late to back out now, I've bookmarked the post). |
| bookmarking is meaningless.... | lidarman Sep 10, 2003 9:22 AM | | since I never said "I'll do it." But, I will strongly consider it so do remind me. :P
Suddenly I feel a deep fear from strong sarcasm "Its nothing but fun, I tell ya."

| HA! | Drewpy Sep 10, 2003 9:27 AM | | And I quote:
i "I'll do it."
Fish in a barrell. |
| Emil Villa's Internet Pit "Where the Elite meat to eat Pete" | Lurker Spaz 23 Sep 10, 2003 9:06 AM | | Pete is a made man, the Elite have closed ranks and now the Malocchio
has focused on you.
Better to read all His posts and draw your own conclusions.
Skitz/Spaz/Etc. |
| c'mon people! figure it out! | slowSSer Sep 10, 2003 9:56 AM | | you realize that if you take everything that Pete takes seriously, then I'm not sure you belong on this site, or the internet for that matter.
if you're that gullable, then Pete has won, you've lost- end of story. |
| I find it all quite amusing | Lurker spaz 23.5 Sep 10, 2003 12:55 PM | | Pete can say whatever he likes, I love it
when he stirs shiznitz up!!
It's great human microdrama.
The Elite always rule.
The Elite are annoyed by an anonymous skitzo spaz |
| I think he's a damn....... | clarkgriswald Sep 10, 2003 10:20 AM | | nice guy. See the passionites pictures. I think he shot and saved most of them (ahhh.... the pictures not passionites). And he seems like a decent dad. I've never had a problem with him. Even in the middle of a flame war, with some one else, he answered my question nicely. So he dosen't seem to target everyone. |
| only if blatantly stupid.... | slowSSer Sep 10, 2003 10:25 AM | | ...does he target you.
Online persona does not equal real person. Back to the gullability issue here.
Hopefully I'll eventually get to meet him, unlike BV, who I had a chance to meet at Sea Otter this year, but missed out.
damn. |
| "Good luck" (nm) | K-Zero Sep 10, 2003 10:33 AM | | |
| Does your ... | NewMex Sep 10, 2003 10:58 AM | | mama know that you are out playing with the big kids? Did you realize that you just put a big target on your back? Do you realize how whiney you sound? Did you realize that this is a mountain biking discussion forum and not "Psychology Online"?
Man, get a grip, seek professional help or something. Just stop the whiney a$$ $hit. |
| Do you know anything other than cheesy rhetoric? | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 11:04 AM | | Hey, you responded, you're part of the problem too. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. |
| You obviously .... | NewMex Sep 10, 2003 11:59 AM | | don't know what the problem is. My response was tailored to try and get your immature butt to realize that you've created your own problems. If you think there's a problem here you should evaluate your own actions critically and you will likely (actually probably not because of the lack of critical thought processes) determine that the general concensous here is that your "poor pitiful me, pete attacked me" act is falling on uncaring ears. If you don't want to or can't play the game then get off the field. (Just had to throw in some cheesy rhetoric.) |
| Whatever dude | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 12:10 PM | | You haven't said anything new that hasn't been said before and said better by someone else, so at least contribute something amusing. Obviously not too many people care and obviously no one is taking this extremely seriously. Duh. |
| Good, you've ... | NewMex Sep 10, 2003 12:49 PM | | figured out how to plug the lamp in so that the bulb illuminates. |
| Let me guess... | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 1:16 PM | | ...you're probably a yank who votes republican, right? |
| Nope. [nm] | NewMex Sep 10, 2003 1:26 PM | | |
| Well, that's one good thing about you then (nm) | The Rear Admiral Sep 10, 2003 4:26 PM | | |
| More than we can count for you. [nm] | NewMex Sep 11, 2003 6:31 AM | | . |
| Provided me directions to Packer saddle | Roger_ Sep 10, 2003 12:01 PM | | for my wife, the other day and is the founder of YES tubes. ;0) |
| Why just yesterday | pedalAZ Sep 10, 2003 12:53 PM | | he was exceedingly helpful in responding to a post asking how to haul bikes in an enclosed trailer. What a bastard, eh? |
| Pete is guilty of this........ | Lurker spaz 23.5 Sep 10, 2003 12:58 PM | | -he does not suffer fools.

| Geez, where's PhoenixKen when ya need him? (nm) | Drewdane Sep 10, 2003 12:59 PM | | |

| I've said lots of nice things | PmbH Sep 10, 2003 1:51 PM | | and I'm named Pete
:)
(damn I wish I could make a decent MTB video) |
| it's pretty simple | The Weasel Sep 11, 2003 9:26 AM | | I don't post pics and loads of ride stories. My contributions are pretty much nill and sometimes silly. But I'm probably tolerated because I don't whine or attack people. Why get so wrapped up in it? What's the point? It's internet discussion. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful writeups, pics, and movies these people provide. Then, go ride.
Oh and Pete - I think he offered me a beer once. |
