| You can't ride this no more. ~VIDEO~ | Pete. Sep 10, 2003 8:16 AM | | Some folks at the Tahoe gathering a few years ago rode this bit when we did "long Toad's. It the "Christmas Valley DH."
Last year a plane crashed, started a fire and portions burned.
I hooked up with David aka DGC a few weeks ago to ride the trail before it was changed and/or lost for good.
It's under threat from the Boxer bill, those psychos at the CWC, sundry other Wilderness freaks, and a local FS guy who hates bikes.
From TAMBA:
"Wilderness Advocates are pressuring the LTBMU to CLOSE the Xmas Valley and Dardanelles Lake trails located in Meiss Meadows in South Lake Tahoe to bikes!!!
In order to address erosion issues, the LTBMU has proposed a re-route of the Xmas Valley trail in its EA of the area. They also support the continued usage of bikes in Meiss. Although TAMBA supports the re-route, the California Wilderness Coalition and the League to Save Lake Tahoe are trying to stop the process citing social conflicts and damage caused by bikes. As usual, they are incorrect and using bikes as a scapegoat. They are insisting that bikes be banned and are sending 1000's of emails and letters against us.
SPEAK UP NOW! The LTBMU needs public input to make a decision by JULY 13. Contact Kristine Leep at kleep@fs.fed.us (she needs an email to be official.) Phone: (530) 543-2783. Tell her you are a member of TAMBA, you support the re-route of Christmas Valley as outlined in the Proposed Action: Alternative 1, and you'd like it to remain open to bikes. Be sure to thank her for supporting continued multi-use in the Basin.
If we don't speak up now, this favorite could be CLOSED TO BIKES!!! And, when you're out on any trail, please remember the Rules of Trail. Thank you!"

So we rode it and videotaped it for posterity's sake and because it's just plain fun. I spoke to David last week and it seems that we were just in time. The re-routing has just begun...

| Funny, the trail doesn't really seem eroded... | Surestick Malone Sep 10, 2003 9:04 AM | | ...in the sections shown in the video.
Too bad it's closed, sweet trail. |
| Funny, the trail doesn't really seem eroded... | DGC Sep 10, 2003 8:08 PM | | Its not closed yet, and hopefully it wont be, but that is the threat by the wilderness Coalition along with the Senator Boxxer bill to close it and make the entire area wilderness designation.
Next week I find out more in a meeting. |
| 32 Meg! Thanks for the warning Davo ya barrrrrstid! | Grizza® Sep 10, 2003 11:23 PM | | Okay okay, I'll go DL it tonight when I'm asleep. Sheesh.

| Great ride that day! | Roger-- Sep 10, 2003 10:50 AM | | Thanks for the info. |
| Very Cool....would be terrible if it is closed.... | Ebo Sep 10, 2003 1:53 PM | | I can live with a re-route, but losing it entirely would really be the pits. Hoping to hit this area end of September. Saw DGC's picture last night and was stoked. Now watching your video doubles my interest. Was jonesing to go on his guided tour this last gathering, but was up there with just one of my daughters (younger was sick at home with wife) and my sisters family. Hard to bail on a Sunday and expect my sister to watch her and wait around. Still fun, but no rides, just hikes. I'll be sure to check out the link to TAMBA. Thanks. |
