You've got Cleveland National Forest, which includes lots of fire roads and of course rails like San Juan Trail Chaquita and Trabuco Canyon trail, Whore Thief and Holy Jim Trail.

Holy Jim and San Juan to Blue Jay and back and are my favorites.

I ride aliso woods every other morning at 6:00 am and whiting ranch every weekend (including santiago truck trail) and still love riding them after years of it. there are other trails close by ortega hwy other than san juan trail which is amazing. If you go to South County Cyclery and ask them they can point you in the direction of a nice single-track fire road combo right behind them. Although this time of year the trails get overused and down right soft and sandy (which im sure you are familiar with in carlsbad), they are still worth it. Laguna Wilderness (open weekends only) has some nice singletrack / fire road combos along with el moro, fullerton (yet to ride) and chino hills (yet to ride). all these parks are within 15 minutes of ortega hwy. have fun

There is so much riding in that area. In short you can ride from Pomona to the North and as far as Lake Elsinore to the South. Most of its fire road and single track. Loops can make for some epic rides.
You have got good stuff up theremtbbill

I'm a north county, SD guy myself. I really like riding in Orange County. SJT, Holy Jim, Tracbuco, Santiago Truck Trail, The Laguna Hills, lots of good stuff up there. I have some OC trails on my website so take a peek. Also check out the Team Basso website. They organize a lot group rides for all skill levels. You will not a have a shortage of folks to show you around.
