Who remembers threaded headsets?(11 posts)

Who remembers threaded headsets?Kami
Sep 10, 2003 5:12 PM
Here's my pickle. I'm fixing up my old roadbike to use on my VR trainer (got sick of swapping tires every time I wanted to ride) and had my LBS throw in a new headset. This was a couple weeks ago. I finally got the rest of the bike put together and realized that the stem is off by about 20 degrees. However, when I loosen the bolt and try to turn the stem, it will not turn. It appears to be seized, even though it was installed only a couple weeks back and never used.

Can anyone give me any tips to straighten out this stem?

Thanks guys...

Once you've lossened the bolt that is located at the top of the stem's quill, the stem should be free to move. If it's not moving try your best to twist and lift the stem free of the frame. Some stems can be fairly tight. Be sure to grease it if it is not already.

If it will not budge even with a lot of force applied, I'd take it back to the LBS and ask, "what did you guys do!!!???"

I had a two foot wrench on the stem and a lever in the fork, twisting with all my might, and it wouldn't move. I take it that isn't normal... =)

You're not loosening the headset top nut and not the bolt on the top of the stem are you?!

loosen bolt, leave allen wrench in there and tap on it with a rubber mallet, tap harder if needed. Once you knock it down it ought be loose enuf to rotate straight.

The bolt will not drop down. It seems as though the compression devise doohicky inside (technical term...) won't loosen enough to seperate. I was tapping fairly hard... :(

back the bolt all the way out of the quill and hit it harder. may want to squirt some WD40 into the steerer from the bottom.

Reminds me of an instruction manual an engineer buddy of mine once wrote. It started with these two steps:

Step 1: Get a hammer

Step 2: Not that one. Get a bigger hammer.

It didn't make it thought editing.
