| Way OT: Does it bother anybody else that Brittney Spears... | pimpbot Oct 18, 2003 11:34 PM | | ... doesn't ever sing live? Her 'performances' seem to be nothing more than glorified, high production lip-sync-athons.
I just caught her act on SNL, and no matter how good she looks or how well she dances, she brings shame to musicianship. She's a dancing monkey in front of an organ grinder. At least Madonna sings some of her parts live. (I knew a guy who was her live FOH engineer, and he said she has her parts pre-recorded, and when she starts to get off, they mute her mic and go to the tape. Heh!)
Her pre-recorded singing has that classic Neumann U87 mic through a Neve Mic preamp kind of tone, but she had a Sennehiser headset mic, which has a totally different tone. She even hit the mic with her hat and nearly knocked it off her head, and no pops or anything.
As a musician, she really pisses me off on a sub-atomic level, and nobody seems to notice.
Anywho, end rant. I know, I know... I worry too much. It's just another sign of the apocolypse.
:)
Mt bike content: I'd rather be working on my mt bike. |
| I agree | The Retro Grouch Oct 19, 2003 1:37 AM | | I prefer to hear an artist actually singing their song rather than a lip sinc act. If I want to hear the recorded version, I can toss a disc in the player, but I enjoy hearing artists vary the song's sound a bit.
Content...noticed that I have a flat as I was heading out to work this evening.

| it bothers me | thebronze Oct 19, 2003 3:44 AM | | I dont care how much makeup she has on, it bothers me. I dont think she looks that good either. A walking advertisement for plastic surgery.
She is this generations bozo the clown.
I realized that last week when I caught a commercial for a childrens music CD, it was completely top 40 but resung by kids. I then realized that her audience cant even drive. Worse yet, a good portion cant even ride a bicycle.
I know we had Madonna and all in the 80's but no ones parents were buying her music. We just had the posters. Still its nice to know Britney is nothing original, just this years Madonna, or Leaf Garrett, or whatever and the back street boys are menudo.
I like Carla Gugino from the Cisco TV show-thats a woman. |
| yeah it does ... | Schwinng Oct 19, 2003 4:15 AM | | Hey, pimpbot.
I think that this either shows that she can't effectively sing while she dances, or is somewhat of a weak singer in general. If she looks winded during her dance steps, then it'd make sense that she can't sing while dancing - did you ever play an instrument in marching band? It's a beach, man. But, I would seriously HOPE that she's not doing this because she can't sing well - can you say "Milli Vanilli"?
I wonder if Hilary Duff also uses pre-recorded singing tracks.
How about Jessica Simpson? I think she goes live because the kid's got some chops. Same goes for Christina Aguilera. This kid's got some *serious* chops, and there are a few others of this new younger generation who can actually sing and sing well.
But, the main "instrument" (voice) being the pre-recorded part? One word: KA-RA-O-KE.
I don't mind that some parts are pre-recorded because - as we know - some performers just don't have the budget to hire a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th keyboardist to cover all the various instruments recorded into a song.
But, when it comes to the main "instrument" (singer) in the act, it should definitely go live, 100% of the time - even if she sounds more winded during her dance moves.
Shows that she needs to spend some more time in the saddle getting into shape, eh pimpbot? I'm heading for the trails in about an hour. There ... 2 mtn bike-related issues I brought up.
Cheers,
Schwinng |
| She is "Milli Vanilli"....Fell asleep before she came on SLN... | Ebo Oct 19, 2003 7:18 AM | | No great loss thats for sure. She no longer has an audience that will buy her music. My daughters don't even like her any more, so what is she left with? Mostly a bunch of perv's like myself who like to see her flash her body around. And even that's not all that great. Two years or less and she will be a nobody. 2 cents. |
| yeah it does ... | pimpbot Oct 19, 2003 8:12 AM | | Yep, I've done marching bands (baritone horn, trumpet) and musical theatre (playing in the band and acting). I've even been the lead in a musical once.
I 'get' the 'performance' thing, but I strongly feel that the music should come first, otherwise, why bother trying to fool the audience into thinking you're really singing. Personally, I feel this is lip-sync crap is dishonest, and disrespectful to the audience.
In her defence, she did actually sing the second song live on SNL. I still think she's a dancing monkey with an organ grinder backup.
Milli Vanilli was even worse. They didn't even sing their own songs to begin with. Those were session vocalists on the album. Some scumbag producer put the whole thing together, and it blew up in their faces. They released a second album with them really singing but it sucked. One of the Vanillis (the one that is still alive) actually is a singer/songwriter in LA and he's now pretty good, but nothing like MV.
Anywho, I'm off to put in 18 miles at Annadelle. |
| Bothers me too... | Jisch Oct 19, 2003 8:38 AM | | There's a whole other rant about who gets to be a star and who doesn't but I won't go into that here.
I play in an original hard rock band, I jump around like nobody's business when we play. I sing too. There are times when I get out of breath, but I can usually hold it together. Its really about conditioning.
Biking content - without biking there's no way I'd be in good enough shape to jump around for an hour or more like that and still be able to sing. I can definitely tell the difference, like when we do a gig in the late winter - I have to be more careful about jumping around. Even in my best shape I am always sore the next day. Whole body sore.

Ooookay. |
| It's called... | fred³ Oct 19, 2003 4:42 AM | | "entertainment" for a reason. I've never heard B.S. called a musician so it doesn't phase me. What does get me p.o.'d is so called Reality t.v. shows. How can it be even remotely real with a television crew watching/filming your every move and taping your every move? What's worse? People who watch them.
Me? I watch the other crap on t.v. Riding my bike is what I do to inspire dreams. |

| Dang, good point, BV | pimpbot Oct 20, 2003 11:13 AM | | Same applies to me, eh? I was just ranting, but you're right, I really shouldn't let BS bother me on hte sub-atomic scale as she does. (she really doesn't, I was just ranting)
Good frickin point, man.
You gonna be back in the BA at some point, Geir? You need to humiliate me on the trail sometime soon.

| You are not alone | CruzBomber Oct 19, 2003 12:19 PM | | I'm definitely with you on this one. Like most here on this board,
I have not seen much of her, but when I do see a half time show, SNL, or something of the like, I nearly always see lip sync'ng. They are just a pretty puppet which is similar to female newscasters too. Whatever appears pretty or most acceptable to society, is placed on the screen. Most actors/actresses are incompetent, but their family name or pretty face (or who knows, the sex acts they perform) allowed them in. |
| I heard it's a Scraeder | Wasatch Walt Oct 19, 2003 2:00 PM | | the valve type so she can pump up or deflate her breasts, I think she should of went with coil instead of air, but if she went air, why couldn't she of used Presta? .... maybe there is a No Tubes system for her also? the history of her breast size increases and decrease has made a lot of fodder for the internet .... |
| doesn't bother me at all... | lidarman Oct 19, 2003 3:11 PM | | because I don't listen to her music so she can sync all she wants.
She is talented but she is a creation of big business and high pop style so her sound has to stay studio quality just like McDonald's has to follow strick rules to stay consistent. Most 13yr olds don't care if she really sings live or lip syncs.
And the McDonald's comparison is perfect. She is the music industry creation to appeal to the largest group of record buyers just like nsync, Backstreet boy, limp bizcuit. Britney is smart. She knows that she was groomed to in this business and how it works. |

| You are worrying about her too much. | Cabin Fever Oct 23, 2003 7:19 AM | | i think that for the most part, any and all males could care less whether or not she sings, just as long as she stays hot and makes it seems like maybe one day one of us will get to bang her.
seriously, she is not a musician in the sense that her music is worth something; rather, she is more effective visually, as a sex object.
when it gets down to it, you really shouldn't think about her as anything else other than a hot body; that is the only way to be happy. |
