| Score - Free Pair of Shimano M545 pedals | Muddah Oct 19, 2003 2:42 AM | | Met a guy who used to bike but doesn't any more for some reason or other.
Said he had a pair just lying around and asked if I wanted to try them...sure.
Used but in fair shape. Going out to try them this afternoon. Had my house broken into the other day and lost 2 grand but for some reason this makes up for it a bit. |
| Cool, nice score! | pimpbot Oct 19, 2003 7:56 AM | | I just destroyed my first set of those, and dug them so much I bought a second.
There is a screw inside that holds the outer peg that retains the outer cage that has a habbit of working loose. The only way at the screw is to remove the axle/bearing assembly. Okay, here's where the bonehead gene kicked in for me. I had gotten them apart to tighten this screw a few times by gently grabbing the splines with vice grips. Baaaad idea! I destroyed the outer seals. When researching replacement parts, it turns out that the whole axle ass'y can be purchaced for $30. I figured I may as well get a new set at $57 from Jenson usa, so I did and then have a pool of spare parts.
Anywho, I dig these pedals. I have a bad habbit of unclipping when I get to techy stuff, and these at least give me a real platform to work with.
BTW, any wrenches out there, who've taken these apart... is one side of the axle assy revere threaded. I know the pedal/crank interface is, but how bout the axle ass'y?
Downside of these pedals is that they weigh a lot. Boo frickin hoo!
Anywho, enjoy them. They're great pedals. |
| they work | Cube Oct 19, 2003 9:20 PM | | great pedal for abuse, wreaked a pair and was going to rebuild them but the replacements were cheap. they beg to be abused! |
| Used them yesterday and this morning | Muddah Oct 20, 2003 2:05 AM | | Perfect, just what I needed. I also clip out when I get into rougher stuff and always wanted a larger platform to put my feet. That has always been my biggest concern, my wet foot would slide off and I'd come crashing down.
Did manage my first OTB with them last night. I didn't adjust the release tension and it was set hard. My front tire went into a hole and stopped and I couldn't unclip....over we go. Sorry no pics. |
