Real Kids MTB's, 24" wheels (16 posts)
| Real Kids MTB's, 24" wheels | the Mule aka skateparks Nov 28, 2003 10:15 AM | | My daughter is outgrowing her 20" GT Zaskar and we need a replacemetn frame for her by Spring. Logically, her new bike will be 24" wheels but I cnanot find any manufacturers who offer serious bikes in that size. I don't know why, it must be a huge market...
BTW, I am looking for an XC bike so bikes like the Kona Stuff Jr. won't Work.
She is now 50" tall but will be more like 52" by spring. |
| define "real" and "serious" | bn Nov 28, 2003 12:20 PM | | Doesn't just about everyone- Trek, Specialized, Kona, etc.- make 24" kids mtn bikes? |
| define "real" and "serious" | the Mule aka skateparks Nov 28, 2003 12:48 PM | | Real and serious as in the bikes that we all enjoy riding. Frames that will hold all of my old XTR stuff and a nice Ti rigid fork and that weighs 15 pounds complete rather than 30.

Yes, all of those companies make 24" kids bikes, but none seem to be "serious" bikes. All have too-long chainstays ( I've never understood that) and weigh ungodly amounts.
Her current bike is a custom made GT Zaskar that was made by a GT employee for his daughter that I picked up when my daughter was 4 and we held on to it until this summer.

I don't mind spending the $$$, this is her sport and she loves it (insert face of proud papa) ...besides, put one of these babies on Ebay after they've outgrown it and it's gone before the 7 days is up. |
| Kona Hula, 24" hardtail can be a light XC bike....NM no message | sparrow Nov 28, 2003 5:08 PM | | none. |
| heres an idea... | IdeaSSguy Nov 28, 2003 2:19 PM | | try singlespeed next season. If she doesnt like it get something else or and 3spd-7spd hub or something. I searched but came up with nothing. I think you may have to go custom to get exactly what you want. This is a norco 24" jr cruzer. with some mods you could get this under 15lbs easy. Hey you could even get her into BMX it would do wonders for her handling skills. |
| re: Real Kids MTB's, 24" wheels | melman Nov 28, 2003 8:26 PM | | How about the Specialized Hot Rock? My son has one however he did out grow it also. The bike is great. It has an RST fork with coil spring (no elastomers) and compression settings. Also twist shift 21 speed that works flawlessly. Can't beat the $300. price tag. One more great thing is the standover height from the sloping top tube. |
| Here is a 24" High-End Bike...... | Timoshenko Nov 29, 2003 12:42 AM | | Made by Kind Cycles in Arizona. Owned by Brandi Fabian and fabricated by Kavic cycles. |

| frankthewelder... | airwreck Nov 29, 2003 10:32 AM | | I remember seeing something about his kids bikes.
Also try tomac, recall his kids having cool bikes also.
Seems any custom shop should be able to do it. |

| Diamondback and Raleigh | Mellow Yellow Nov 29, 2003 2:15 PM | | You have several choices. All can have their guts upgraded to house your old XTR stuff:
Octaine 24

Coil 24

Mountain scout 24

Mountain scout FS 24

Ram 24

I hope this is helpful.

| ibex also makes a nice looking hardtail... | cohenfive Nov 29, 2003 10:24 PM | | 24 inch with decent components for $329 plus shipping, sounds like a decent deal. i will be buying a 24 inch for my son in the next few months as well....one thing that surprises me is that i haven't seen any used ones at all....where do they go when the kids go to the 26 inchers??? |
| Try the Diamond Back | DiRt DeViL Nov 30, 2003 3:18 PM | | I had to go thru the same pain. My son jumped from a 14" Toys R' Us iron bike to a Haro CR Mini (BMX) and eventually moved to a Diamond Back Octane 24.
Why the Diamond Back? It's one of the few kids bike with an aluminum frame and so so componentry. What I did was to swap the drivetrain from Shimano tourney to a Deore/LX combination, LX hubs, LX cassete, PC-59 chain, Deore shifters and a RST Capa fork.
I looked at Specialized, Trek, Gary Fisher, Giant and all of them offered no front suspension and cro-molly frames, I wanted something that will last for a while and I believe the Diamond Back did the trick. Later found out that Kona and others were also making kids bikes but no regrets here. |
| Here's the bike owner racing | DiRt DeViL Nov 30, 2003 3:21 PM | | He's 7 and just started to use clipless. He's having a hard time connecting but who didn't when starting. |
| Wife's Curtlo | Drevil Dec 1, 2003 8:44 AM | | She's 4' 8.5" (don't forget the half, she says), and got tired of riding rigid 24" wheel mountain bikes so I saved my pennies and got her this Curtlo four years ago. 26" adult wheels, and a springy fork!
Components have changed since I took this pic two years ago. I try to lighten it up for her as much as possible.
