| canti brakes (brake forum x-post) | RHr Oct 29, 2001 10:31 AM | | Figured I should post this here too, since there are probably acoupla canti users over here..... While trying to my frame for SS I ran into a couple of little snags with the brakes. The new Avid SD7 calipers go on the (new) fork bosses fine, but they don't fit right on the back (frame) bosses. The post (spring end) coming out of the base of the caliper doesn't match up with the hole at the base of the frame boss. The post hits between the hole and the outside edge of the boss. Since these brakes are machined well, there is no slop allowing for the post to slide on in. I figured it was because the frame was old (made for cantis0. At my LBS I tried to fit a pair of Avid Shorty 6 cantis. Same problem. Then they gave me a pair of cheapo Chang Stars. On these, the spring is not fixed into the base and is covered only by a cheesy pastic cover (there is plenty of slop). Viola! They're ugly as sh!t, but they fit. Here's my questions: 1) anyone ever run into this problem and figured out a fix to allow for the use of vees or cantis with integrated/fixed spring posts? 2) does anyone have any suggestions for a nice old school canti in which the spring is not integrated/machined into the base? 3) is there a way to run the cantis with the Avis SD7 levers and have reasonably good braking power or do I absolutely have to go with canti-specific levers? Any help would be great. THX - RHr |
