| Why ride fixed gear? | Todd E Feb 14, 2002 8:14 AM | | Hey all, I just was wondering what the benefits of a fixed gear were.
I've been SS off-road for a while now and keep seeing posts here about fixed gear bikes. The guys are doing this on road only, right? I have ridden track bikes before and I really can't see how you could ride fixed off road and live. At least not on difficult trails.
Whats the deal?
Thanks,
Todd |

| Sometimes I ride mine off road, it's good for a laugh | LEF-T Feb 14, 2002 10:32 AM | | I run 44x18 so climbs are much harder, getting over logs and big rocks are a real challenge. You never know until the last second if your cranks will clear an obsticle.
It's a great commuter and handles dirt roads with ease. I think I've learned to spin faster and smoother. On the highway it's not much different, but a better workout.
There's less to go wrong, no freewheel to wear out, and it's silent.
It makes me really appreciate freewheels off road. I'm sure with practice a fixie could handle just about anything. Look what some people can do on a unicycle off road. |

Now that I ride unicycle off road, They're all just bikes to me. None of that chain drive, two wheeler stuff for me. Also, I ride a lot more aggressive on the unicycle. I do bigger drops than I would ever do on a bike. cheers....Joe in Iowa |

| Anything is possible | Bigwheel Feb 14, 2002 10:02 AM | | I have posted here before about riders that kick ass offroad on fixed gear bikes. Some examples: White Rim (in a day), Kokopelli Trail, Single track around CB,Co. and elsewhere, 24 hr. off road races etc.. It ain't easy, or for everyone, but for those that go there it seems to work. |
| Fixies are fun | DAS Feb 14, 2002 10:53 AM | | I dig the fixed gear, but only on the road. It's lighter and climbs like a bullet, but other than that there are no real advantages. It's mostly just more challenging, more simple, a great workout, more fun. Riding in a pack can be downright terrifying. Some guys say they do it for training. I just do it for fun, variety. It's not for everyone. Most people have plenty of fun on freewheeled bikes. |
| Thanks all! | Troll Feb 15, 2002 7:32 AM | | Thanks for all the replies, I can see how it could be fun to ride a fixed gear. I don't think I could on our trails(too many long, steep V outs, and log crossings) but it could be a blast on a dirt road.
We did have a guy that rides with Cris Holmes(unicycle guy) come and ride some of our trail last month. He had fun but the Vs were not doable for him. His name was Dave...something I can't remember. It was cool though.
Anyway thanks for your time.
Good Dirt!
