Monocog vs. Surly 1x1(2 posts)

Monocog vs. Surly 1x1bikelabtech
Feb 14, 2002 11:16 AM
I currently have a Monocog (essentially stock), but the opportunity to purchase a very slightly used Surly has arisen. I'm wondering if there is a big enough difference between the bikes to justify the Surly. I'd like to get some feedback from people who have firsthand experience with the two bikes. Should I just upgrade the Redline as things wear out, or Is the Surly a good option? My only complaint with either is the use of v-brakes- I like discs much better (for the winter slop and mud) but can't drop the $$ for an expensive singlespeed disc specific frame (the complete Surly with the 1x1 hubs is less than $400).

In my opinion, the Surly frame has a better feel to it. I think the purchase is justifiable. But I'm a little biased.
