Anyone in Richmond VA?(13 posts)

Anyone in Richmond VA?WAM
Feb 15, 2002 7:10 AM
I'm going to be in Richmond for work the week of Feb 25th. I'll be bringing my SS and my lights and would like to see if there are any locals who would be willing to take a visitor out on the trails, or some ideas of what trails I should try and hit on my own. I may also either head south early for a Sunday ride (24th) or stick around for a Saturday ride (3/2) if anyone has anything planned in Richmond or north. I'm driving in from Central PA.

Thanks for any help.

Two of us SSers meet every day on Belle Isle (in downtown Richmond) at 11:30 am for an hour-long ride (sometimes much longer). Lots of technical single track and steep hills. Reply back if this works and I'll give you directions. There's also a race on Sunday at Lodi Farm in Fredericksburg (about 45 minutes north) on 2/24 and a race at Camp Hilbert (about 45 minutes west) on 3/3. You can find maps to all these locations at www.bikeracing.com. There are many places to ride, though night riding is a bit limited. For night riding, most people ride at Powhite Park, in Richmond.

Cheers.

I'd love to do that lunch ride, but I doubt I'll be able to. As a consultant I can never plan when I can take lunch. I may do the Race on the 24th. I'll check into Powhite Park. Let me know if you or any of your buds are into a night ride during the week.

Thanks for your help.

A good friend of mine rides Powhite park quite often [he lives in the neighborhood right next to it] - and at night too. I'm sure he'd be happy to show you around. Powhite is fairly small, but its got some fun stuff in it. Lots of constant up/down riding, so it can be a bit tiring on a SS, esp if you're running 2:1.

If you want to ride Bell Isle and related trails during the week, during daylight hours, I'm sure either me or Greg [I'm the other SS'er] could hook up with you. My office window overlooks Bell Isle...

What part of richmond will you be in? About 30 mins north of downtown, there's Poor Farm park, which you're not *supposed* to ride after dark. But there are more trails than Powhite. But I think the best bang for your riding buck I think is the downtown trails due to their technical nature, and intense climbing.

Happy riding,
John
Anyone Doing The 12 hr Lodi race on Single Speeds?T O M A

Besides JACazz? (he's on my team)

we're going to be raceing our ss's probably just register in the regular sport class.

i don't think there is going to be a single speed specific class. bikeworks says they want at least five entrys for a new class.

anyone intersted?

One of my Snowshoe partners and I want to, but it's too far in the future to plan. It would be cool to have an SS class, but it's also kind of fun to kick some butt in the regular Sport and Expert classes. In my experience, if the course is tight single track like Poor Farm, having gears doesn't really matter. I've not raced at Lodi; what do you think?
The Race Is May 4-5... Fredericksburg, VirginiaT O M A

go to www.teambikeworks.com for info.

i don't know all of the details yet but last year it was something like $25 per racer to enter!....real steep!

it's a real nice event with a lot of good people putting it on. a nice change from the commercialism and mega-fees of big-name races

primative camping (the way it should be)
unfortunately, no open fires

I going to try and get a crew together and ride the last year's course. probably feb. 23rd or mar. 2nd

i'll post when i know for sure.

I know that the trails there will be a blast on a ss!
When is it? nmWAM

So do you just repeat the trails on belle isle or do you head to other trails nearby? Just wondering, because the singletrack is so short. I used to ride belle isle a lot, but I haven't recently.

Pocahontas, powhite and poor farm are all I ride now. I got tired of pocahontas rather quickly, and powhite is 5 minutes from my house, so poor farm is the only place of interest to me any more, where I don't have to repeat trails over and over. It's very disappointing that Richmond has so little good riding, when some of the best riding on the east coast is 2 hours away in Harrisonburg.

You're missing out! Bell Isle is just the *start* of the trails. There aren't many trails on Bell Isle, of course, but there are trails running all up and down the southside of the river. There are 2 miles of intense trails in forest hill park. We tie all these trails together to get a 12 mile "loop". Sometimes we'll include a run out to Powhite park which easily doubles the mileage.

Can You Still Ride Texas Beach?...T O M A

Richmond's a cool place, i used to ride urb: (shocko, Church Hill, Jackson ward and pretty much all over the fan....even some parts of oregon hill!!). and singletrack, starting from byrd park down through, er,... pump house rd. ..there seemed to be a lot of trails to be pedaled upon when i was in school there. but that was a long time ago. i thought for sure that all singletrack would be banned by now!

it certainly is getting that way up here in NoVa!
I'll check out forest hill park.fonseca
