| SS front fork--80 or 100mm, whatchya runnin' & why? | JAK Feb 15, 2002 12:47 PM | | Hey All--
First off, have a great weekend of one speed lovin'. I would like to pose the the question in the subject line for all those running a squishy fork. Thanks for your time and opinions.......... |
| 100mm & 125mm | General Coonskins Feb 15, 2002 1:12 PM | | First off, I don't think you need suspension to ride a bike but it does increase my riding experience. After many hours in the saddle I really enjoy the comfort of a soft front end. I road plenty of miles on a rigid fork and learned to ride with one.
I went with the 100mm on my Fisher. I have a 80mm on my Bonty and felt I could use more. I think travel has something to do with the rider size. If your a larger rider more travel will benifit you. My wife has a 80mm fork and loves it, she tried the 100mm and didn't care for the travel. I like the 100mm and have it set up with about 15mm of sag which works good.
I just got my Fox Forx 125mm, I am having my new bike built for it so it will not throw the geometry off. I will probally run it with 25mm of sag for better tracking. I think for my size and style of riding the fork will be great. I wouldn't recomend it for everyone.

| hola sen~or | gonzostrike Feb 15, 2002 1:12 PM | | 80mm Manitou SX-R on my Redline. Probably will transfer it to the Curtlo frame, but may rebuild the blown Z2 BAM. I would bet that 100mm of coil/oil travel (is there any other?) would sap too much energy on tough climbs, but that's purely a guess. |
| have fun @ the freezeride!! | JAK Feb 15, 2002 1:58 PM | | be SAFE!
adios |
| the Safety Team will be there in force | gonzostrike Feb 15, 2002 3:15 PM | | I take it you're going to go skin up something and slide down dropping knees L&R?
have a great weekend. |
| re: SS front fork--80 or 100mm, whatchya runnin' & why? | C h r i s Feb 15, 2002 1:21 PM | | 100mm, cause it's what I had lying around the garage!
CMC <- rides a converted M2 SS, but currently shopping for a steel SS frame. |
| 100mm Z-1 X-Fly On a SPOT Brand..... | T O M A Feb 15, 2002 1:54 PM | | I Also ride a rigid can-o-ale ss but would like to get a better rigid fork for it.
I missed the boat on DeeEight's big fork sale! oh well....next time |
| 80mm air fork | DAS Feb 15, 2002 2:07 PM | | 100mm with coils/springs is just too much fork for me. |
| Marzocchi Z.3 BAM 80 on Bianchi BuSS | trimojo Feb 15, 2002 3:42 PM | | Rode the BuSS rigid (pure) with Tioga Factory DH 2.1 tires until I sssstrrrretched the chromoly fork on a 2 foot wheelie drop. I realized that I wasn't going to take it easy on my ss, and my Zoke wouldn't have even bottomed out on that hit. Slammed the BAM on the BuSS and was surprised by how much faster (and lazier with lines) I could be. The Bianchi came with a 420mm crown to fork distance and feels only slightly sketchy at 80mm. 100mm would be too much. I bet 63mm would bring back some of the lightning quick handling, but I don't got one. I met a guy who rides a BuSS with his SID at 80mm also. |
| 2.4"^2 | GMF Feb 15, 2002 5:54 PM | | My '92 bonty is sporting a 2.4" travel RS (61mm) and a 2.4" front tire. For as little time as i've put on the combo, i quite like it. Never felt the need for super travel, and a long travel fork would mess up the handling of the frame. It is just about tuned to "sweet" right now. The big front tire not only adds suspension but sticks to the sketchy technical downhill stuff.
Anyway, i figure a smooth line and good bike handling skills more than make up for big suspension...

| rigid..100-120mm BLACK-but took it off..LOOK AT PIC !! | Matrix Feb 15, 2002 7:41 PM | | I have a Azonic DS-1 ..Pepperoni short rigid fork/aluminum because the MArin chromoly is making my front wheel sit to the right -like it's outa dish ?? Maybe it's warped? .....The 100-120mm BLACK really rocks-but is 4.2 pounds & the Pepperoni is like 1.75--also took off the 2.4 Moto's & going with 2.1 Mythos-rustwall Japanese tires to reduce weight.....I'm on a weight loss program Bike & rider......I would like a MARS 80mm instead of the BLACK !!------------------------ http://www.answerproducts.com/forks/black/elite100120/info.htm |
| I also swapped DH tires for 2.1" IRC Mythos XC | trimojo Feb 15, 2002 8:37 PM | | was running rigid and 2.1 Tioga Factory DH on front and 2.35" Maxxis Mofo on rear... never lost traction with that combo but getting going was painful
went for Marzocchi BAM 80 and 2.1 Mythos XC front and rear and still managed to lose weight even with the 4 lb. coil/oil fork... best of all the weight isn't of the rolling type or unsprung type so the bike accelerates much more quickly and I'm climbing more easily even if I have to feather the torque at the rear tire a bit |
| I put 2.4 Moto's/Black 120mm back on & | Matrix Feb 17, 2002 1:11 PM | | The 5" Manitiou Black /Mammoth wheels...The 2.1 Mythos are TOO narrow & the Pepperoni is TOO short & harsh....I still cruise away from most riders on the {not steep}climbs with freeride setup.... |
| I'm tempted to either go rigid, or next best thing, Amp fork... | DeeEight Feb 17, 2002 6:31 PM | | nothing like a light fork that steers great and has good tire clearance. Right now though i'm debating my TiMega again, was winter riding today wishing i had bigger tires than 2.1s to run low pressures in fresh 4" powder. Even at 15psi i was having some trouble.
I could switch to a full SS, but for that i'd likely see about getting a disc mount and running a 24x3" tire in back (it WOULD fit, I have 4" wide clearance between stays). Alternatively a single ring setup with a couple bash guard plates, and an rear deraulleur only, and a 26x2.7 or 2.5 Love Tubeless tire. |
