XT hub modification for single speed(3 posts)

XT hub modification for single speedMr. Tokyo
Feb 18, 2002 4:15 PM
Ok, I will be ordering parts to convert a XT hub to single speed duty. One DX freehub (spacers, lock ring and cogs, 16t & 18t), 185mm axle, spacers, lock nuts. I will post the parts list with Shimano part #'s if someone else wants to do this too.
Why the freehub ??Cman/mcm14121996

why not just use spacers on the XT freehub ?
I can see the need for a narrower freehub if U want to build a symtrical/equal dish wheel , but then the disk will be too far inboard.
Wouldnt it be cheaper to get a dedicated SS diskhub ?
Cheers
Experimentation at it's best............Mr. Tokyo

Well, I ordered all the parts and it will cost me about 30.00 total, about the same price for a new free-hub as a replacement for my M755 freehub that suffered bearing failure last fall. I am doing it more as an experiment than anything else. I found out that the spline depth is slightly smaller than the XT hub, but is the same pattern. I'll post a list of the parts I ordered. Also, a SS disk hub is not cheap, so I saved money as well.
