Jericho Red October Belt Drive, picture from Sea Otter (7 posts)
| Jericho Red October Belt Drive, picture from Sea Otter | Fast Eddy Mar 27, 2002 1:45 PM | | It must work. Someone was obviously riding it enough to get it dirty. I didn't get to ride it, but it seemed like with a 200lbs rider you could probably feel the stretch/tension.
The rear pully was a machined piece that fit a normal casette hub. It seems like if you wanted "Red October" you wouldn't make it out of a King hub. Bzzzzzzzzzzz. |
| Took me a minute..... | seattletim Mar 27, 2002 1:51 PM | | ....to get your Red October reference! Funny and true.
I may have mentioned it, but when my buddy and I checked that out, he asked the Jericho dude a question. Conversation went like this:
Jimmy: "Hey, man, how does that belt drive do in muddy conditions?"
Jericho dude: "Um, not really very well."
Me: (blowing Sierra Nevada out of my nostrils as I laugh at the answer) "snicker snicker snicker......"
Their frames look awfully sweet, though. Especially the Payback. |
| Did you spin the cranks backwards? | shiggy Mar 27, 2002 2:38 PM | | Lots of drag. They stop instantly when you give them a twirl and let go. Most chain setups will spin a revolution or two before stopping. |
| Thoughts on belts. | seattletim Mar 27, 2002 2:48 PM | |
Hmmm.
The only thing belts seem to work on are gasoline/electric powered vehicles.... a gas-powered motor can easily overcome the drag you mentioned on belts. (I think the belt's inherent stiffness is what causes the drag, not the pulleys or the hub.) The belt is awfully quiet, which may be why if you look at the front of your motor in the family car it has belts everywhere and not chains. Belt drive motorcycles are fairly common, too---they are supposed to be quieter---but one certainly doesn't see belt drive motocross cycles, does one?
I think the last human powered vehicle I saw with belts was the Honda "Kick-N-Go" back when I was 12 or so. A singlespeed, for those of you who may be wondering what this has to do with the price of tea in China.....
I think I'll stick with my KMC BMX chain, thank you.

| I'm glad someone asked the obviuos.... | jacazz Mar 28, 2002 5:55 AM | | The first thing that came to my mind when i saw that belt drive contraption was "wonder how she'll hold up in the mud?" I think it's safe to say that the chain drive will be around for awhile. |
| seems to me | bn Mar 27, 2002 2:45 PM | | that the belt might want to roll off the "chainring" and they would want to make it with flanges like the rear.... obviously that's not the case though. |
| re: Jericho Red October Belt Drive, picture from Sea Otter | (....................) Mar 27, 2002 3:00 PM | | I would hate to grind that front cog on a rock.
The idea is cool... and they would probably sell a few belt transmissions (transmission only mind) to the terminally curious if it wasn't for the split chainstay needed to utilize it.
As for reality, I already weighed in in a previous thread regarding my motorcycle belt experiences, just say I wouldn't be lining up to buy A belt drive bicycle. |
