Help with chainline(6 posts)

Help with chainlineczardonic
Apr 16, 2002 10:37 AM
I am trying to get a few more mm of chainline adjustment on my fixed gear to banish some drivetrain noise.

At this point, my chainring is a few mm (<5) too far out. I have added washers between the chainring and the crank, but the bolts aren't long enough to add any more. Are there longer chainring bolts available out there somewhere?

I have the narrowest BB spindle I can run.

yes, there are some longer ones. Any LBS that orders out of the QBP catalog can get them. The lengths in the catalog are 6mm (single ring), 8mm (double ring), 13mm and 16mm.

What's the rest of your drivetrain made up of? There might be another way if you describe the whole thing.

Front:
  • 68 x 107 Shimano UN52(?) BB
  • Sora Crankset (was a double)
  • 105 42t Chainring

    Rear:
  • Suzue Basic hub
  • Surly 17t cog

    Chain:
  • SRAM Track.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

track chainline is like 42.5 or something... you may never get a straight chainline unless you use the inner ring!
move some axle spacers and redish the wheelclub

can't you just move some axle spacers around from one side to the other until the chainline is perfect, and then redish the wheel so the rim is again centered? that's the preferred method.
thanks. i half thought of thatczardonic

there are plenty of spacers to play around with. for some reason it didn't occur to me to re-dish the wheel though.
