UglyDog & Sagebrush recap...(7 posts)

UglyDog & Sagebrush recap...Andy aka Rut
Apr 16, 2002 1:35 PM
We arrive for the race at 9am. We wait in the registration line for 1 hour. Get to the bikes and start warming up the legs. I meet some new singlespeeders and say hello to some old friends. 1 1/2 hours later the race starts. We get lucky and the coordinator moves the singlespeed class up from behind the sport and beginners to behind the expert men classes. Yes, they put us infront of the women experts! 95 plus degrees and we start with about 1-2 miles of blacktop climbing.
Apparently, people were acting like roadkill on the side of the trail. Hiding under any shade available. There are not too many trees in the area. It was hot! Timan decides to play mental games and wears all black. Uglydog wears the traditional Team Kelly colors. One person, not in our class, decides to take a helicoptor ride to the hospital. He suffered from heat stroke and he was in acoma for 5 hours at the hospital. Squidchucker, wishes that he was that lucky. Unfortunately for him, he bonked HARD about 1/3 the way in. Uglydog and I battled for most all the race. He demonstrated how to do a sand-dive for me. It was great, I was right behind him on the "singletrack-downhill" and BAM into the dirt he goes. I could not have had a better view. Thanks. Thank god it was only 18 miles. After finishing the race, we all laughed at each other because of all the dust/dirt we collected on the trail. You know the look...like we put a Marks-A-Lot marker on our teeth.
Now for the bad news...apparently, there were 3 singlespeed racers that started with the tandoms. They were told by the staff to stay there. I spoke with the coordinator and because the racers were told by the staff to stay with the tandoms, the staff included their times in our official times. Actually, it's only fair, they were told to stay there and if I were one of them, I would have lodged a complaint as well. Unfortunately, that moved me to 5th and Uglydog to 6th. Sorry UD- no plaque.
The award ceremony lasted until 5pm and we didn't get home until about 9pm. In reflection, we arrive at 9 to race at 12 for 1 1/2 hours to get the awards at 5pm. Too much waiting!!!

All in all-a good day,

gobble gobble,

andy

Thanks for waiting around to get the scoop. Yeah the whole waiting for a delayed start time, results and general lack of organization has cured me from signing up for another TeamBigBear event for a long time. See you in Northern Cali.

Hi, I was one of those riders left with the tandems. What a screwed up deal. The group of us is sitting there in line to start and the guy holding the start time sign says "oh yeah, this is singlespeeds too.". But I'm thinking man, I know I saw more SS'ers than this while I was waiting in the reg line. Then a friend of mine rides up and says a bunch of SS's left five minutes ago. Needless to say we started behing the junior men 16 and under and all others before them. More power to them, but they were all getting off and walking everything while I and another SS were trying to keep momentum. You know what I mean.
This was my first Team Big Bear event and if this is the way they always are, then it was also my last. Is this the norm? Any other SS races coming up?
After the final results were posted I ended up seventh. Apologies to the guys that got bumped.

This is typical for TBB. They always have a good SS turnout, but are so slow at getting results out, always running around like chickens with there heads cut off. I'll probably do most of the TBB races, But I hate giving my $42 to those cheap asses.

Try some Rim Nordic races. Way more technical, almost 70% singletrack. A strong group of SS usually show up to put the hurt on. Rim Nordic Loves SSers. They usually give us the expert distance.
