| Anyone used Surly Torsion Bar (or any flatties w/big sweep)? | GlowBoy Jun 26, 2002 3:34 PM | | I'm looking to replace my mountain bike's current Ritchey flat bars with something else that is a bit wider and has more sweep (at least 10 degrees or so), both for leverage and comfort. But it still has to be a flat bar - no risers. (Actually, my ideal would be WTB drop bars, but that gets expensive ... this is my beater bike so I'd like to keep this project's price under $50.)
All I've been able to find so far is the Surly Torsion Bar, the Titec Flat Tracker, and the Salsa Pro Moto. The Surly is especially appealing because of the 15 degree sweep - 280g isn't super light, but still seems reasonable for a STEEL (!) bar.
Anyone used any of these bars or have any recommendations?

| specialized has a 26 x9 deg bar | mondo Jun 26, 2002 3:47 PM | | 180 grams
i like my Titus Ti bar, 24 inches x 3 deg |
| Titec Hellbent Flattracker | Single Speed Outlaw Jun 26, 2002 4:09 PM | | Got them on the gearie, so they don't get used much, but they are much better than standard flat bars and pretty light. Have the width and sweep of a riser w/o the rise. |
| So who makes a wide Ti flat bar, 26+? nm | mbolger Jun 26, 2002 5:23 PM | | |
| Seven Cycles does | Drevil Jun 26, 2002 7:12 PM | | Give them a call. They'll make any width and bend. I got a 26" one made with a 10 degree sweep. They do use Al shims though, but they don't creak. Light & strong for $100. |
| Titec makes a Ti flat Tracker too... | martini Jun 27, 2002 6:12 AM | | Spendy as all get out, but probably still cheaper than the seven bar Drevil got. I've got a set of the Titec Hellion 1" rise bars and love 'em. You can hardly tell theres rise in bars. The nice thing about Titecs is that the sweep is compound. It sweeps up AND back, sooo comfy!

| Found one! | GlowBoy Jun 26, 2002 10:21 PM | | Thanks for the help guys ...
I swung by my local bike co-op today, and found a used Salsa CrMo bar for $15. 24" wide and 260g by my measure, and almost as much sweep as the Surly. Slipped on the bar ends, wrapped the whole arrangement in cork tape, and I've got almost as many hand positions as on my road bike. Almost.
They also had a used Surly/Nitto Torsion Bar for $5, BTW, but it felt MUCH heavier, more like 380g than 280g.
