Rebuilding a SS - How concerned about weight should I Be?(6 posts)

Rebuilding a SS - How concerned about weight should I Be?Scott in Jersey

Just got my rigid fork delivered (kona p2) which is replacing the old '96 Z1 Bomber 4" on my XL Santa Cruz Chameleon. The P2 drops the bike weight by about 2.5 pounds (guestimate) and swapping the rock shox post for 208 gram Syncros Ti post should strip off another 1-2 pounds (approx.) so I've lightened the ride up a lot already.

What I am wondering about is swapping the Magura HS22s out for traditional V brakes, probably Avid rivals. I've always liked the AR50s and have not used the racelines (bike's been out of comission since I bought them) so I only have MTBR reviews to go on. What do you all think? I'm weighing in at 215-220 #s these days (depending on # of beers from the night befor) if that has any influence on braking feedback. Here's the SS prior to the above changes... Thanks in advance for any advice. - Scott
PS - Yeah, I know the place is messy.

Scott,

If you have the $$$, I'd swap out the brakes. Actually, you can pick up a complete set of Avid Single-Digit 7 brakes/levers through Supergo for $65. I like these brakes so much that I replaced the Magura hydraulic rim brakes on our mountain tandem with the Avids (much better braking "feel").

I wouldn't be too concerned about weight. Your bike's probably gonna sit in the low 20s in poundage right? That should be fine. The only weight that I'm concerned about with my Trek 930 conversion is the weight of the engine!!! That's probably the best place to lose weight!!

I went from Avid arch rivals to the racelines and never looked back. Don't get me wrong I loved the avids and if I were interested in going Vs again they'd be what I'd get but the maguras have a more consistant stopping manor especially in the wet and muck. I swaped mainly because it wouldn't take much mud to clog my rear brake cable to the point where it wouldn't return. I see lots of mud riding. I run the maguras on my ss comute which I was also using as a courier bike and without the cables it became the most maintinence free ride I've ever owned. They're also great for touring because of the low maintinence thing. Evergotten salt water onto your brake cables in a third world country and you'd know what I'm talking about. Bugger the weight. They work brilliantly and the avids dont offer any performance benefits apart from being lighter by about 2 chocolate bars at the cost of reliabilaty and lower maintinance.

You won me over with the mud & consistant stopping power. My 1x1 is my true play bike, year round mud, snown, sand, salt etc... and I have experienced the same issues with my AR50s on my dualie homegrown. Thanks man!!!
Keep the Maguras!!!Brando
