| Anyone use platforms instead of clipless? | daveIT Jun 27, 2002 9:55 AM | | Just wondering if any of you are opposed to clipless on the trail. |
| no, nobody on Earth uses platforms. NOBODY. wait... | gonzostrike Jun 27, 2002 10:08 AM | | heh heh heh
this topic comes up 2-3x/month. my sense, purely a rough guess, is that around 60%-75% of SS riders in this Forum use clipless.
I use Sun/Ringle ZuZu platforms primarily, but have a set of Time ATAC Aliums for those all-day energy-draining rides.
Of my SS riding buddies, all of us use platforms at least half the time. Two guys use nothing but platforms. |
| re: Anyone use platforms instead of clipless? | MO Jun 27, 2002 10:22 AM | | I've been riding 20" most of my biking years, so platforms are what I'm used to and what I have on my SS. I've also got the scars on my shins to prove it. I have the Sun Ringle Zuzus, and like them quite a bit. Skate shoes or shoes with a gum sole seem to grip the best. The only thing I don't like about platforms is if you hit a bump hard your feet might come off. That and having your shins ripped open if you slip. |
| re: Anyone use platforms instead of clipless? | fbhits Jun 27, 2002 11:29 AM | | A couple of weeks ago on our One-Speed Wednesday group ride someone actually declared that he thought riding clipless on a single-speed was tantamount to having gears. Being the only person clipped in that particular day, I told him he was a fool and if he was so concerned about the back to the basics elements of singlespeeding he should get rid of the boingy fork and v-brakes he was sporting.
Because I knew we would be doing some bushwhacking, I rode flat on last nights ride so I could wear sensible shoes. For the most part, however, I ride clipless. Steep, technical climbing is so much harder with flat pedals... |
| climbing behind you it's hard to keep up regardless... | gonzostrike Jun 27, 2002 1:11 PM | | you and JAK are butt-kickin' foo's when it comes to the climb.
saw Scott A at lunch. he said he bailed on last night's ride because he was out taking pics all day in the scorching heat/sun.

| re: Anyone use platforms instead of clipless? | single & rigid Jun 27, 2002 12:17 PM | | I use Atomlab BMX platform pedals on the SS. Platforms add as much to the hop on & go experience of SS riding as having just one gear does, IMO. I ride rigid too, but it's fine by me if other people do it differently.
For me, clipless does not improve power or efficiency, or help on steep climbs. I think clipless is more secure when going fast over bumpy ground and might be faster in this situation if you're getting tossed around a lot. I like platforms as they are so comfortable, much easier and faster when hopping on or off the bike, plus I can wear shoes that are super comfortable and excellent when walking.

| All my dirty bikes got platforms.... | BCRider Jun 27, 2002 2:36 PM | | Around here the trails of choice are more technical. I like the platforms because they let me run my skill right up to the bitter end and then just step off or down to save my bod. Tried clipless and did about 5 prat falls in as many minutes. Psyched me out so bad I ain't ever going back. If we had more smooth trails where speed was more an issue then I'd go clipless in a minute but roots, rocks and fallen trees just beg for platforms in my book.
But I also believe that every set of pinned platform pedals should come with a set of lower leg armor........ :o) |

| Can't do it - Been running clipless too long. | Brandon Jun 28, 2002 8:05 AM | | I tried running flats for a while on another bike. I kept pulling my foot off the pedal thanks to being used to being able to pull up on clipless. Plus every time I'd hit a bumpy section my foot would move around on the pedal. With clipless I just snap in and forget about the pedals. I've never been stuck in them after a crash my feet always seem to twist enough to snap out. I run mine fairly loose - just enough to prevent pulling out accidentally.
When I first started MTB'in I tried toe clips for about a year, I never could get used to them. I got stuck in them plenty of times, could never get re-started on the trail without one or the other hanging down under the pedal. I could never get used to having to pull my foot back first then putting it out to the side. Once I switched to clipless I never had those problems again. I guess being used to the release mechanism on DH ski bindings helped. |
| Platforms 4-Ever !!! | scooby_snack Jun 28, 2002 10:38 AM | | tried 4 styles of clips. I just hate em....

| YES! | jesboogie Jun 28, 2002 12:47 PM | | I run Primo tenderizers on my Bianchi BUSS. I bmx so Im used to it. I hate walking around in funky shoes. I just bought a 12 speed road bike, and I am not sure what pedals to run. I used to use looks, but Ive heard times are good too. Maybe eggbeaters?
