Dying to launch "Project SS"(9 posts)

Dying to launch "Project SS"The Weasel
Jun 27, 2002 10:10 AM
Sending my steel Fisher to Tom Teesdale for a dropout conversion and paint job. My quetion is, are there any places to get prebuilt SS wheels? Second, Paul vs Spot, which hubs win, or is there anything a little cheaper that works as good? Thanks.

webcyclery.com for wheelsets, or any LBS that uses QBP for just a rear, which is all you need. Surly is probably the cheapest mtb-specific single rear hub and does the job fine

The "cheapest" though is to get a solid axle for your existing rear hub (assuming you're running horiz. dropouts). Makes for a nice solid rear wheel. You do have to make sure that your freehub is steel rather than aluminum but the flip side is you can make fairly quick gear changes and you have a slightly wider range of gear choices.

I bought a set of QBP pre-built wheels consisting of Surly 1x1 hubs & Sun RhynoLite rims from my LBS one year ago for $200. It's the best wheelset I've owned. One year later, they're as true as the day I bought them (a spoke wrench has never touched 'em). For the price, you can't beat this deal.

QBP also offers a Surly 1x1/Salsa rim wheelset that was a little more expensive (~$20 more), but I don't know much about the Salsa rims.

have you thought of an E-BB retrofit???kam

who much is you drop-out retrofit gonna be? e-bb is really nice. no messing with the brakes after tires removal. just pivot the e-bb, and pull the wheelset out of the vertical drop-outs. also, you can slide the e-bb unit abit left or right and use a 9sp. hub with spacers to fine tune you chainline. plus, it's the way to go if you're ever gonna run disc brakes.
cheers.

I think my qoute was $224 or something, which included the dropout conversion, paint job including stripping the old one in an acid bath (and he does nice ones!) and return shipping. Thought that was very reasonable. I've seen the EBB and it looks nice, but I that that would be much more, and I don't plan to run discs. Can I run the EBB with w/o SS dropouts and your 9 speed hub suggestion? Thanks

E-BB frames use "regular" vertical drop-outs, like the ones that are on your frame. you can use a regular 9sp. hub and you plain old quick release skweres with a cog sandwiched between spacers. i'd think that the E-BB retrofit would probably run about the same (I'm, sure it depends on the E-BB unit you get though), just email Teesdale and ask. The Co-Motion E-BB I have it's a pretty simple one that has pinch bolts on the BB shell. Some E-BB units cost more I'm sure, like ones that have an internal wedge and expand to stay in place in the shell (like a Bushnell E-BB that Teesdale usually uses). On a Co-Motions, just loosen the bolts, and rotate the E-BB unit with an allen wrench using the crank arms for leverage. I've seen his work and it's great. I had the E-BB retrofit on my Dean Private frame done by Wade at Vulture Cycles, a custom builder in Bend, OR). He also does great work and his prices are very reasonable. I had my E-BB retrofit done, along with having a disc brace added and the derailleur cables stops and v-brakes mounts removed for abit over $120 (all labor and E-BB parts included). E-BB is the way to go on a SS, IMHO. Pics of my ride are posted above. check out the "Dean E-BB retrofit..." above. I've attached a pics of my Co-Mo E-BB, maybe you can get an idea of how it works.
Cheers

Thanks for the tips guys. My LBS deals with QBP so it shouldn't be a problem then. I just want to get this thing going. Damn birthdays/graduations/babies/insurance/new tires are really cramping my style. One thing at a time.
