Redline Mono cog(6 posts)

Redline Mono cogp6t7

Does anyone out there know anything about the Redline Mono Cog? I was looking to buy a ss but don't want to spend a whole lot of money even though i really want the Bianchi DISS. But $350 and $850 is a big difference. I'm mostly going to use it on the streets of philly, the knees need a brake from the fixed gear, but i might also throw it around on the trails. Any info???? Any suggestions????

I've been riding one for about 6 months now and really like it. I bought a frame and wheelset and custom spec'd the other parts on mine instead of buying a complete bike, so I'll only comment on those two parts.

The frame rides really nice, either with a rigid or suspension fork. The wheelset, on the other hand, is a Catch-22. The Redline hubs are very smooth, but some genius at Redline mated them with Alex Downhill rims that weigh over 800 grams. I knew this when I bought them, but the wheelset cost less than half the cost of having a custom built rear wheel with a good BMX hub and light MTB rim. I'm really regretting that decision lately as I'm a bit of a gram counting geek.

It rides great, should outlive most of us and comes with a totally solid parts selection. This is a great city bike. The price is unbeatable. The one and only part I'd change in the short term is the rear freewheel. It's some kind of generic brand. I'd have the LBS swap out for a Shimano or ACS Claws. It's only a $10 difference.

The rims are actually pretty good, I think. While they have the "DH" designation they aren't really downhill rims. And they don't weigh 800 grames. They're tough but not super heavy. And they have eyelets. See the Alex website.

For trail riding you will want a smaller front chainring. The Cog comes stock with 39 teeth up front and 18 in the rear. That's great for the streets but too damn hard for trails. You could put a 36-t ring up front for a 2:1 ratio. Or put a 20-t ACS Claws freewheel on the back for something a hair easier than 2:1. Or do both for a nice hill-climbing ratio.

The Cog will also be much, much more comfy than the DISS, espec on city streets. I really like it with a short-travel suspension fork up front.

As has been noted on this forum before, the only thing that keeps the DISS from being a completely un-f'n-believable deal -- the only reason that Redline hasn't been selling a 100 zillion of them -- is the 110mm rear spacing. It's not bad, it just means you don't have the full panoply of choices of MTB rear wheels and, for chainline reasons, cranksets.

But it!
feel free to "but it!" too, but what I meant was "buy it!" ;-)the steel-is-real man

I bought mine as a frame and rear hub and built from that. I like the redline hub. Mine's built up with a Rhyno Lite rim. Excellent wheel. The frame itself is fine enough. Great for the price. It won't break. It rides pretty well, but it's kind of heavy. Know that if that sort of thing bothers you. The rest of the bike is nothing special. Closeout Judy SL, Control Tech bar, old school ching-ching bell (you'll be passing more people than you think). Easy to build up a nice bike from that frame. Smooth Jeff's "lock of the week!"
