| BMX freewheel question | Dave Hickey Sep 13, 2002 8:06 AM | | I'm a regular poster at RoadBikeReview and I have a quesion regarding BMX freewheels. I have 3 single speed bikes and on all of them, I'm using a 9 speed hub with a BMX cog and a lot of spacers. I going to build a Single Speed specific wheelset and I was wondering if the quality of BMX freewheels are the same? My plan is to use Dura Ace trackhubs with a threaded-on BMX freewheel. Is there a big difference in Freewheel quality? |

One thing to watch out for, is that some BMX freewheels either 14 or 13 tooths have a smaller inner diameter, thus flip flop bmx hubs, and also the reason Shimano developed the DX series interchangable cog freewheel. Thus make sure everthing fits before you put it together. |
| re: BMX freewheel question | Dave Hickey Sep 13, 2002 8:25 AM | | Maybe I should just stay with my nine speed hub and a BMX cog. I thought about the DX series hubs but aren't they 110mm spacing? Has anyone tried to add spacers to get to 126,130, or 135? |
| Track hubs are narrow, too, are they not? | shiggy Sep 13, 2002 8:49 AM | | I would not use the track hub unless your frame is built for it. Just get a Surly or such if you want to run a freewheel.
The BMX freewheels all last about the same and they all get trashed after a time.
Really nothing wrong with using a "standard" cassette hub with spacers except the wheel is dished and is slightly weaker - not that it is a big problem on geared bikes.
And Yes, the DX BMX hub can be spaced out with a longer axle. |
| Yes, track hubs are 120mm. nm | Dave Hickey Sep 13, 2002 9:12 AM | | |
