Free is a good price, especially for steel! (24 posts)
| Free is a good price, especially for steel! | Fast Eddy Oct 5, 2002 1:01 PM | | My buddy Dave and his wife wanted to get rid of her old Stumpjumper, so I volunteered to take it off their hands. It had been used for parts for about a year, so the cranks were off, there was no chain, and the rear wheel was MIA. For the pics, I mounted my needs-a-new-rim Phil Wood rear wheel.

| Yo Eddy... | tamjam Oct 6, 2002 3:42 PM | | That right-side shifter pod would work perfectly on my current 1x? project. Is it a 7spd or 8/9spd pod? Care to sell it?
Brian |
| 7spd. Yours for the asking. Email me. nm | Fast Eddy Oct 7, 2002 10:44 AM | | |

| Wow | 1 Speed Oct 5, 2002 1:12 PM | | A friend of mine has one in that same color he rides almost exclusively. It's a great frame. I wish all the big manufacturers would still make at least one high end steel frame.
What do they say? "Wish in one hand and Sh*t in the other".
Great job. |

| Last "before" picture, | Fast Eddy Oct 5, 2002 1:13 PM | | Ugly old partofadrivetrain. The black gauze tape was covered in something between pine tar and the sticky black stuff of old electrical tape. I didn't find a single ding in the tubing however. The paint is also pretty decent.

| A flick of my magic wand, er, wrench, and some old parts, and... | Fast Eddy Oct 5, 2002 1:29 PM | | Voila!
I had all the parts to make her right. The tires and chain were borrowed from my Gunnar for the pictures so I didn't have to deal with putting tires on my Phil Woods wheels, and deal with a chain tool just for the pictures. The nice-enough XT v-brakes and levers came with the frame.
The cut-down Koski riser and obnoxious red race face cranks also came with my Gunnar. The grips came off my gearie awhile ago, and the saddle is left over from a Paramount SS conversion I did last year. I used the same chain tensioner technique on that bike. I left the derailler on, adjusted the set screws to get a chainline, and threaded the chain through only one pulley. Dorky looking, but the price is right.
A quick measurement leads me to think that it may work without a tensioner with a 32:17 combo.
The frame is way too small for me, and way too big for my kids, so I'll probably sell it. What do you think? $300 with the original cranks and front wheel, but no chain or rear wheel? The rock shox is probably good for about 120 lbs. It would be perfect for a female of about 5'5" and 100-120.
Notice the crank stiffener bolted in place of the granny ring. Terminaut actually bought it from me on eBay, but he never paid. Instead of reminding him, I'm keeping it for these cranks. Heheh.

| Oh yea, it's 16.5" c-t, 21" ett, and the stem is about 130mm. nm | Fast Eddy Oct 5, 2002 1:38 PM | | |
| Hey, that's my stiffener!... | terminaut Oct 5, 2002 3:14 PM | | Heheh... I sent you an email on 9/3 asking for you Paypal account and didn't get a reply. Now I know why. ;-) Pretty neat frame - too bad it wasn't a bit larger, eh? |
| I don't think I got it. | Fast Eddy Oct 6, 2002 5:45 AM | | I don't get much mail in that box, and I save them all. What's funny is that I thought that crank was compact until last weekend when I tried to mount another ring on it. As I realized it was standard, that stiffener was right in front of me on the workbench, with the 5mm, and a stack of chainring bolts spread out there too. Like it was meant to be...

| Aha!... | terminaut Oct 6, 2002 8:10 AM | | It's the third email in the list. There's a message in there:
If you've got Paypal let me know the email addy to use and I'll send the dough on over. :-)

Payment Status: Not paid. Buyer plans to pay via Other Services
It was probably confusing 'cause I included the message as part of the checkout process. If you want to keep the stiffener it's no biggie (I've gotten another one), otherwise email me your Paypal info and I'll send dough on over. BTW, what's your schedule look like for Nov. 16th-17th? |
| I wish... | Fast Eddy Oct 6, 2002 1:01 PM | | ...I could make it down for the gathering. We have a major project going on at work, and it will probably extend over that weekend. |

| those bikes are pieces of art | Trevo Oct 6, 2002 12:25 PM | | My new SS project is a 98 Hardrock. I stripped all the paint, removed all the cable stops, and replaced them with full brake routing guides. Now I need to get it painted and get my CRC stickers for the top-tube. "one Fu*king speed" on both sides. Plus XT Vees, Magura sealed disc hubs, rhinos, singilator. I wanna find another Tioga "Wonder Dawg" So I can have a set. Sweet bike though man. Good luck with the sale.

| watch out on your Magura disc hubs... | red-haze Oct 8, 2002 2:58 AM | | the freehub is "special" and breaks alot and Magura has stopped making replacements. At least that was with the magura comp disc hub. got one, on its 3rd freehub in 4 months, took over a month for magura to sent the right replacement freehub and then they were snotty about it (to my LBS owner no less!).

| I think the hubs are re-branded Sachs.... | CraigH Oct 8, 2002 5:33 PM | | Since SRAM bought Sachs out a year or two ago, they might still have spare parts.
I'm running a Magura Pro hub set. Good so far, except one of the lock nuts on the front hub cracked. LBS was able to find a nut that fit in their junk bin. |
