| 2003 Ride & Event Calendar -- wassup next year??? | Spar¡cus Nov 19, 2002 9:37 PM | | Yo bros & toes,
I work at a place that makes me compete with 15 co-workers for vacation time. They only let two of us be on vacation at the same time! It's sick. Plus I have to submit my 2003 vacation request by mid-December. (Well, at least I get 28 paid days off.)
Anyway, I want to do more of these 'gathering' kinda things next year. Meet more of y'all at rides, events, races, gatherings -- that kinda stuff. So what's going on in '03 and when is it happening? Lemme know so's I can request time off, okay? I'll bet there are other riders in the same boat I'm in.
Please post the NAME of the event in the reply subject line followed by the dates and description in the body. Thanks!

P.S. Here are just a few of the events I'm interested in attending: Sea Otter, Pedal the Pinchot, Cascade Cream Puff, Tour of the White Mtns, Old School's 'Still Creekin" ride, Bend Big Fat Tour. But there are SO many events worth knowing about -- please post any and all!
P.P.S. I'll start. |

| Shasta Lemurian!!! | TwoWheelinTim Nov 20, 2002 1:17 PM | | I'm planning on going. It was a gas last year. I rode the squishy geared bike and took first in the beginner clyde by over four minutes. The SS will be much more of a challenge. |
| yep, i couldn't make last year but i will this time... | kyezle Nov 21, 2002 10:48 AM | | let's plan on road tripping up there. my wife will most likely want to go as well. hey, she's got her own ss now, so she can ride with jessica sometime. did chris go up with you last year? |
| Chris... | TwoWheelinTim Nov 22, 2002 11:08 AM | | Yeah, he went with us. We all piled into the van bikes loaded on top. We pitched camp at a really cool campground that had plenty of empty campsites. It was close to French Gulch too. I'm looking forward to next year. I'm wondering what gear ratio to use for the course. I'm running 34/17 for the local trails but the Lemurian course is a long climb with a long descent. I'm wondering if I should put an 18 or even a 19 on for this ride. |
| I used a 34x20... | shiggy Nov 22, 2002 5:12 PM | | ...and still pushed a fair amount. There where several grades in the 18-20% range, especially on the long course. Most of the downhills are fast enough that you coast no matter what you run.
The worst parts for the SS are the paved start where all the gearies passed me (and then they nearly stopped as the road turned up on the dirt) and the long easy downhill to the finish - too fast to pedal, too slow to coast. I had a corner worker yelling at me to go faster (and not in a joking way) as I coasted - faster than I could pedal - through the final turn. |
| Thanks shiggy... | TwoWheelinTim Nov 23, 2002 2:21 PM | | 34x20 sounds good to me. I wonder if I'll need a longer chain to jump up three teeth on the cog? I'm guessing I will.
I vaguely recall another single speeder lamenting the fact that while racing, the "gearies" go blasting on by on the flats then cause you to stall on the climbs as they inch their way up in a granny gear. It matters not to me. I did it for the fun of it this year and will do it again for the same reason next. I feel the secret is to not lose perspective of what it's all about.

Monterey, CA
Singlespeed team, anyone? |
| Cascade Cream Puff 100 & SS Gathering | shiggy Nov 20, 2002 9:07 AM | | All in the Oakridge/Eugene central Oregon Cascades (west side) area.
The 'Puff is 29 June, 2003.
I have been thinking about a week-long SS gathering from 21 June - 29 June or 27 June - 6 July.
There are more great trails than can be ridden in a month. Ride or help with the 'Puff (volunteers get more spiffs at the 'Puff than racers get at most other events.) See BIG trees and incredible rivers. Long descents. Pure lakes. Hard climbs. Relaxed cruises through the woods. |
| I like this idea! -nm- | kyezle Nov 20, 2002 11:41 AM | | |
| Talked about this with term & Andy | shiggy Nov 20, 2002 11:50 AM | | Get in some great riding and I get some great voluteers for the 'Puff! 80) |
| Poach The Pedal The Pinchot? | JRA Nov 20, 2002 11:14 AM | | wanna just ride the route by ourselves? I've heard that the actual "event" leaves something to be desired. |
| Three LegSS of the Cascade Triple Crown | JRA Nov 20, 2002 11:17 AM | | 2-day campout to do the three legs of the CTC.
Palisades Trail
Sun Top Trail
Crystal Mtn Trail
HUGE uphills ... 34x24 gearing?
(just a thought) |
| Tour de Felasco and Ididaride in Fla in Jan | ss jimbo Nov 20, 2002 3:49 PM | | The tour is Jan 5 and the Ididaride is Jan 25. Should be some great riding. Both are over 50 miles and the tour doesn't touch pavement the whole way. Thirty bucks for the tour and Forty for the Ididaride, but both come with primo lunch stops (homemade chili and chicken noodle soup at the 'ride') and the 'ride' has post ride dinner.
