Filing AL Vertical Dropouts(2 posts)

Filing AL Vertical DropoutsIDM
Nov 19, 2002 11:30 PM
I am considering a one speed bike project to use an AL frame. Since it seems to be very difficult to alter AL frame with heat, I am thinking of employing filing apporach. My question is that is there anyone filed AL frame? How do they look? Do you use bolts to hold wheel or QR? What kind of gearing and how long has it lasted so far--how old is the frame? And finally do you recomend it?

I appreciate your response.

I currently ride a 2001 Schwinn Homegrown. I normal run a 36:18 which does not require a tensioner but, when my chain stretches it is almost to the point of being able to fall off. Although it is not recommended I filed a little off the back of my vertical drops so that I am able to pull the wheel back to keep the chain tensioned.

Yes, I am running bolt on axles (Chris King rear SS hub) and it doesn't move under my huge load.

Hope this helps!
