| Half links?... | Mountain Cycle Shawn Nov 20, 2002 11:28 AM | | Could someone please explain half links and how they work? I have a 16.5" chainstay length and vertical drops. I want to dump my tensioner. I used a gear calculator softwear but it told me I can't even get close to a 2:1 gear ratio. The closest I can get is 2.32:1 Could I use a half link to solve my problem and if so, what gears could I run using a half link?
Thanks,

| re: Half links?... | poison chicken Nov 20, 2002 7:50 PM | | go 32 x 16, this is for a 16.45...it is possible that you were off in measurement by 0.05 inches. put the chain on back, and crank it over the front. i think this will work for you...let me know. jq@teambigtime.com |
| Specs say 16.5" nm | poison chicken Nov 21, 2002 12:09 AM | | try 32 x 16...i really think it will work for you...it might be tight but i think better tight than loose, plus i wonder what the tolerance is for manufactures, this will really help me and my program if you do try 32 x 16 and let me know if that works for you. however i understand if you don't have this combination laying around not to spend money to try. if it does work, i might be able to raise my tolerance levels in the program. i have been keeping them very small to be on the safe side. |

| Halflinks: Here you go... | T O M A Nov 21, 2002 12:41 PM | | One full chain link consists of one male and one female link. the male end connects to the female end which connects to another male end, nothing screwy going on here. a half link allows you to connect two ends in the space of half a link...simple.
Say you have your shiny new SS frame with it's silly vertical drops. you find out that you can get the perfect chain tension only where two of the same ends meet (ex: two female ends). no problem, remove one of the female ends and install your trusty $2 halflink wich will now let you link up the two ends giving you the tension you desire!
I would like to point out that halflinks work best on 1/8" SS chains. they do not work with surly singleators though.
good luck! |
| 1/8 chains with half links........... | Trevo Nov 21, 2002 5:56 PM | | I run a KMC 1/8 with a half link and it works fine with my singilator

| Hmmm...maybe we have different singulators... | T O M A Nov 22, 2002 1:44 PM | | i've tried to run a half link & 1/8" chain combo with my singleator and the link catches on the U-shaped pully guide. maybe you have a wider guide than I do, my singleator is 2 years old but it still looks the same as the new one on my my friends SS. I think i'll check his out.

| chain stretch. | NEKdvm Nov 22, 2002 1:45 PM | | I single speed on a Cannondale frame with vertical dropouts and no tensioner (okay, it's a Rohloff hub but same concept). I found that a new chain is too tight, and a really well used chain will sometimes drop off. So I take a new chain, ride it on the commuter bike for some time, unitl it is stretched just right. Then I transfer it to the Cdale and it's perfect. When it starts to drop off, I just repeat the process to break in the next chain. |
