| Thoughts on Shimano XT Disc/Mavic 317 wheelset from Jenson? | IbisJoe Nov 21, 2002 7:50 AM | | Posted this over in wheelset forum but thought I'd try here too since there is more traffic. I also checked the product reviews, just looking for more info.
Anybody have this wheelset? http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=50330
I'm thinking about ordering, but looking for feedback.
Thanks. |
| You can't go wrong... | tamjam Nov 21, 2002 8:12 AM | | ..at that price IMO. I paid $200 for that exact wheelset for my Ibis Ripley. They were the standard Wheelsmith build. I've since sold that bike, but I'm sure they're holding up fine for the new owner. |
| Well, there's actually a small chance you can.... | quaffimodo Nov 21, 2002 9:04 AM | | I'd have the build checked by someone knowledgeable in such things, but even if you had to pay a bit for some tensioning work they're still a good deal. Dealing w/Jenson has been straightforward the times I've used them. |
| Have that set on an Isis right now .... | eelpie Nov 21, 2002 11:33 AM | | Had it for a year and it's held up very well. I'd recommend it, as the rims are pretty light yet still strong. The hub is, to quote Mike Garcia (oddsandendos.com), "a pig," meaning it's kinda heavy but pretty much bombproof.
You should still go over it and tweak it as necessary (i.e., check/adjust spoke tension, check that it's true laterally and radially) before and after your first ride.
Go for it. |
| Trueing nazi | Ziggy Stardust Nov 21, 2002 11:53 AM | | I have this wheelset and it's been good for me. Of course, they will need to be trued a few times after you first start riding them (especially the cheap $200 ones that are machine built, or are hastily hand built to machine standards). Just make sure you keep them true after your first several hard rides, and then you should be golden. On the other hand it isn't as critical to keep them ultra trued as with V/canti-brake rims, so you dont have to be a "trueing nazi" about it like you do on rim brake rims.
I've had mine for one season and haven't had any problems, although they were definitely heavier than the non-disc XT Mavic 517's they replaced. If I had a chance to do it over, I would probably stick with the 317 rims and go with a lighter hub...I've heard the hope hub is pretty light (lighter than the XT) and is still reasonably priced with decent quality. Of course Kings would be nice, but then so would a new car.
