| any non-tensioner bikes dropping chains? | Hollywood Nov 21, 2002 8:29 AM | | Since replacing my chainring with a TruVativ ss-specific ring, and a new PC-58 chain, I have dropped my chain on climbs 3 times in the past 4 days; once on Sunday's gathering and twice on last night's full moon ride. Luckily I'm 0 for 3 on bodily injury. The chain goes right back on and is taut - no sag whatsoever. Chainline is straight.
I'm running 32:18, tensioner-less. I'm wondering if it's:
a) flexing cranks/ring (TruVativ)
b) twigs or debris lifting the chain off
c) my ripped thighs are just too much for it
thanks for any advice,

| Worn Cog? | Brandon Nov 21, 2002 8:47 AM | | or non ss-specific cog?
Did you replace the freewheel/cog as well? If the chain pitch doesn't match up to the cog it can have problems meshing under load. |
| cog is a DX that I've been using since... | Hollywood Nov 21, 2002 9:09 AM | | I converted the bike around summer this year. Looks ok, but it wasn't changed out with the rest of the drivetrain this past weekend. |
| Just noticed... | Brandon Nov 21, 2002 9:21 AM | | You're using an 8-speed chain on a SS specific ring, are you sure the chain meshes completely with those teeth, the ring wasn't made for 1/8" chain was it? |
| re: any non-tensioner bikes dropping chains? | Tim T Nov 21, 2002 10:49 AM | | try flipping the cog around see if that helps also recheck the chain line just to be sure. |
| cool, thanks. The chain seems to mesh ok w/ring. Hmmm. (nm) | Hollywood Nov 21, 2002 11:55 AM | | |
| Triple check the chainline | shiggy Nov 21, 2002 12:59 PM | | and that the wheel is straight in the frame relitive to the BB (may not look centered in the stays when it is.) It does not take much to derail the chain. I had to readjust mine several times.
Might try a BMX/SS chain. The side plates are not cut away like gearie chains so they will stay on the teeth better. |
| thanks. Just ordered a King Cog from Kevin @ WC too. (nm) | Hollywood Nov 21, 2002 1:46 PM | | |
