| Paging DAS or Singleminded | JMD Nov 21, 2002 9:25 AM | | Hey guys -
I can't remember which one of you owns the Duke Blue Teesdale SS that you posted a while back. I'm having Tom build me a frame have a question about the paint. How is his in house paint? Is it really any worse than a typical wet paint application and just not as strong as a powdercoat or is it really fragile. For an extra 70 bucks I can get it powdercoated - is it worth it or not? Thanks guys |
| i think... | kam Nov 21, 2002 10:42 AM | | both DAS and single had their tet frames painted. yea...paint looks great at first, but as soon as you start to pile the miles, it shows wear easily. since your ride is steel, have the thing powdercoated, it's the best way to go, and $70 ain't too bad. in the long run, you'll appreciate it. |
| That's DAS' bike | bones Nov 21, 2002 11:08 AM | | Beautiful looking rig foresure. I think he's actually had pretty good success with his paint. I would recommend going with a powdercoat though, my Jericho is powdercoated and still looks great after a year of abuse.
be sure to post some pics!
cheers,

| I last saw DAS's rig... | tamjam Nov 21, 2002 12:23 PM | | ...when I was in Seattle in June. The paint was looking really chipped up, with much more of the bare tubing showing through than I would be comfortable with. And his bike is not even a year old?
$70 extra for a nice powdercoat is definitely worth it.
PS..It's still a beautiful bike DAS, nothing personal! ;~) |
| re: Paging DAS or Singleminded | WAM Nov 21, 2002 11:41 AM | | My gearie is a TET, The paint didn't hold up very well at all. After 2 years I had it powdercoated last winter, and love it. I would go for the powdercoat. |
| auto paint | DAS Nov 21, 2002 2:38 PM | | Yep, my "Azure Blue" TET was painted by an auto body shop in Iowa. You can choose any type of auto paint color. Very economical.
Yes, it's pretty but it scratches really easily. It seems that every time I touch my bike I add a new scratch. Of course, if you were extra careful and don't crash it, you could keep it scratch free.
I would ask Tom to send it to a powdercoater if I were to do it all over again. Powdercoat is for me....super robust but still pretty.
I would recommend candy apple red. I had my Phil Wood frame powdercoated candyapple red and it is Super Dope. |
| it's unanimous... | singleminded Nov 22, 2002 7:41 AM | | Go for the powder. The paint application on my TET looked flawless but it does scratch easily. The primer underneath has been solid, though. It's never chipped or anything so I've never ended up with any spots where metal was exposed.
I've touched up my TET a couple times with the leftover paint that Tom used, which he sent me along with the frame. I'm not sure about the auto paint shop that DAS refers to. I'm pretty clear that Tom did the prep, primer and paint on my frame by himself, by hand. He described the process he went through at the time.
