| headset recommendation | fcc Nov 22, 2002 6:16 PM | | Any advice on a new headset? I'm building a surly crosscheck SS and looking for a 1 1/8 threadless headset recommendation? |

| While I haven't touched my king in 4 years.... | DeeEight Nov 23, 2002 1:19 AM | | I haven't touched my Odyssey Toro Pro in 8 years, one of my FSA's in 2 years plus, another in 2 years plus, a JPR alloy in like 5 years, etc. Headsets actually don't require a whole lot of maintenance as long as the seals remain intact and you don't impact damage anything. |
| B-b-b-but................. | Mike T. Nov 23, 2002 5:52 AM | | ....that's four headsets so that's errrrr like 25% use out of each one relative to someone who uses one bike. Plus I know you have more bikes than four.
In the early '90s I was (still am) using one bike exclusively and was doing many long, very muddy Enduros (plus a zillion training rides) and my early Chris King (didn't even have a logo on them in those days) went five years before it was opened up. On inspection the red Bullshot grease looked brand-spanking new.
That heasdset is still going strong and now living in Montreal. |
| Actually I thought I described five headsets... | DeeEight Nov 23, 2002 4:05 PM | | Stratos : Toro Pro threaded, Amp : FSA Orbit XL threadless, TiMega : FSA Orbit Surelock threaded , Thunderbolt : JPR Alloy threaded, Manitou : King NoThread... yep five. As for more than four, I have six assembled bikes I'd call my own right now (ie, not earmarked for sale or future projects). The Ulgybik has a 1" blue annodized King NoThread on it. The 7th bike to be and the current project for the winter has a Cane Creek Zero-Stack with cartridge bearings. I also have one Tange/Specialized cartridge bearing headset, a 1 1/4 King NoThread and and 1 1/8 King NoThread w/Ti fork race in my tool box for other future projects, as well as a spare Odyssey Toro Pro 1 1/8 threaded if I ever do up another threaded bike. |
| I can't count but I can divide - 20% each then. nmm | Mike T. Nov 23, 2002 4:14 PM | | |
| divide maybe but not if you don't remember the part... | DeeEight Nov 23, 2002 4:31 PM | | where I don't ride the thunderbolt as its the principal loaner bike. :) And The uglybik only got built this summer and has been only used a few times so no sneaking it into the division. :) |
| Both comprehension & math hurt my head. nmm | Mike T. Nov 23, 2002 5:25 PM | | |
| divide maybe but not if you don't remember the part... | Jmac17 Nov 25, 2002 8:40 PM | | Divide,multiply,add.......ARGH! Ok guys, what "percentage" of ones bike "should" be spent on a headset?????....test tomorrow!!!! |
| While I haven't touched my king in 4 years.... | steelbike Nov 23, 2002 6:06 AM | | Pretty much agreed. I've had good luck with FSA's too. Have had a King on a road bike for over 10 years but it doesn't get rode :) much.
Though Kings last for years and you can move one from old bike to new bike, perhaps he doesn't want to spend an amount that will work out to 1/4 to 1/3 the price of his Surly frame. I wonder how many Surly owners have Kings on their bikes? |
| Uh, Term has a king on his Huffy!! (nm) | gpsser Nov 23, 2002 5:03 PM | | |
| If it's good enough to ride, it's good enough for a King! (nm) | terminaut Nov 23, 2002 10:56 PM | | |
| good point on $, some other good ones: | Pablo Nov 23, 2002 6:42 PM | | in my (and friends) experience include WTB Grease Gaurds, Dia Compe, and Cane Creek.
I can see why a guy would prefer not to drop a c-note on a headset for an inexpensive frame. |
| What about the other side of the coin???? | Andy aka Rut Nov 23, 2002 7:39 PM | | I'm not sure about the other headset makers, but I do know that Chris King is a strong promoter of trail maintenence and they support rides and races. In santa Barbara, CK heads down to help out every year with their Trail Days. A weekend of hard work on trails and lots of fun. They also throw several bike races in their area. I like supporting companies that support the biking community.

| re: headset recommendation | 1speed Nov 24, 2002 1:32 PM | | like they are all saying, Chris king is the way to go. I have one I got used in 97' from a friend at a shop. It has been on 3 different bikes and I have never had any problems with it. I had a cane creek that lasted less than a year on another bike. Needless to say it was replaced with a Chris King |
