| singlespeed | mattmatt02 Feb 3, 2003 10:45 AM | | Would it be ok if I had just a singlespeed? Not a geared bike or anything else? Can I do just about anything on it? Let me know. |
| re: singlespeed | Menny Feb 3, 2003 10:59 AM | | You can do whatever you want. Many people start by keeping the geared bike and getting a cheap single in case they don't like it. I did that but have since converted everything to SS and I can ride pretty much anything a geared bike could. The steepest of hills and the long long grinds can stop you from climbing what a gearie could but these hills are few and far between.
If you are a fairly strong rider with decent technical skills, you can do it all with a singlespeed. |
| I lied... | Menny Feb 3, 2003 11:41 AM | | I do have a geared road bike. I leave it in Utah where I am from and the hills there are so steep that a SS is pretty brutal. For mountain you can do it all by gearing down when needed. 2:1 is not impossible there but I typically run 1.9 or 1.8.
I do have an old SS roadie commuter that I ride in Vegas where I live now. |
| I'd say it would be okay | PROGRE-SS Feb 3, 2003 11:00 AM | | I've got just my singlespeed and that's it. In fact, there are no other bikes in my family's stable other than singlespeeds. It's my everything bike. Oh, wait a minute...I do have a geared road bike back in Ottawa, but that will be converted to SS once I get up there and pick it up.

| yeah, why not? | sslos Feb 3, 2003 11:03 AM | | if you do a lot of road, you might want a geared bike for that, but i know guys who are ss exclusively even on the road.
so basically, if you enjoy it, why the heck not?

| heck ya. heck no. | francis Feb 3, 2003 3:06 PM | | Heck ya, it's ok to just have a singlespeed. No, you can't do certain types of rides... but that might be ok.
I've had one SS bike now for 6 months and here's my experience:
I have a couple of trails here in San Jose, CA that climb 2000 feet in 4 miles. Kennedy trail, Mission Peak trail and a few not worth mentioning. They are classic training climbs where you grunt for 1 hour with almost no rest. Are they doable on a singlespeed? No, kinda... with the right gearing and fitness. Are they any fun? NO. So I don't ride them anymore. There are a lot better rolling rides here and they're a lot more fun a nice workout now with an SS.
I also used to ride to my local hill in Los Gatos. The ride was a decent warmup of 8 miles of flat trail. Let me tell you, riding SS on a level trail for miles and miles completely sucks. You just spin out too much. Sooo if I choose to ride from my house now, I take the roadbike.
Downhills? Yeah, you can do anything and they're just as fun. An SS is soooo quiet and it jumps like a flea!
So there's my take. I would still recommend 100% SS since life is simpler and I'm a more committed, happier rider.

| Matt, we r a little biased. Ask on general forum. But since u... | 242 Barham Feb 3, 2003 5:41 PM | | asked. Bikes r fun no matter what kind they are. For me the challenge of a rigid SS is what I enjoy.
To each there own!
