talk me out of riding Cycle Oregon on my SS(8 posts)

talk me out of riding Cycle Oregon on my SScygnus

Why is this crazy?
Comfy steel phil wood kiss off frame, perfect fit
rigid fork (to be purchased later)
1.5" high pressure slicks, phil wood hubs
WTB dirt drop bars, dia compe 387v levers
Will run 44t blackspire chainring, but might switch to my 36 or 34 spot rings on really hilly days.
I'll bring 16-19t freewheel possibilities.
I'll be riding with a friend from bend on his geared road bike, but he likes to ride at a leasurely pace.
I could bring my titanium road bike, but i'd have more fun picking a gear each day and riding SS. why is everyone telling me this is a bad idea? i put alot of road miles on my bianchi SS commuter with a similar configuration.
Just do itSparty

You know what'll happen if you don't.

Do you really have a choice?

Hey, I think it's a great idea. My wife and I did Cycle Oregon ourselves two years ago on mountain bikes with 1.5" slicks ... I ended up wishing I'd brought a road bike so bad I went out and bought one the next month. But we didn't have WTB drop bars and Phil frames. I would definitely go with skinnier, higher-pressure tires than 1.5", though ... that's 38c. You'll notice a big improvement in speed with 1" or even 1.25". Kinda sucks being one of the last ones into camp at Cycle O and having all the good campsites taken.

Part of the fun of doing this will be pissing off the snooty roadies. I don't mean all roadies - most of them are nice. But there are still a lot of road riders who are really conformist when it comes to gear. You know, the guys who look down their noses at anyone who rides a triple chainring. Like having 18 gears to choose from instead of 27 somehow makes you a tough guy. Show 'em a thing or two by riding the whole route without shifting!

I just started SSing last summer, and did a couple of metric-century event rides on my SS. I'm not doing any long tours like CO this year, but I will definitely be doing some full-century and maybe longer rides on my singlespeed. First one will be Reach the Beach on May 17.

Hey, you're in Oregon? Coming to Barbie Camp next weekend?

thanks, i will do itcygnus

man, i really envy the way you guys get together for rides and camping like barbie camp. someday i'll make a special trip down and ride with you.
i rode the Oregon Bike Ride (OBR)on a geared mt bike about 10 years ago, so i'm not worried about the distances or time in the saddle. i live in juneau. been riding SS nearly every day for the last two years. but yesterday, while ordering a few parts at webcyclery, mean todd tried to talk me into bringing my geared road bike for cycle oregon.
might move back to oregon someday; i lived in eugene and corvallis in the 70s. the riding opportunities are so good.
sounds funDAS

That Phil gets so much love!

One gear, one state. ah, the simplicity.
yep, the phil...cygnus

will make its paces around the state of oregon this coming september. still got to find just the right rigid fork. something tall to match with the drop bars. probably something like your tet fork.
your old bianchi is my current commuter, the phil goes off road. both see alot of action. good frames can go for a long time. what are you studying in grad school?
niceDAS

Glad to hear those bikes are getting some action. My road bikes have seen some miles in the last week, but I mostly just study these days. I'm doing an MBA full time and working part time. Hopefully this summer I will ride like crazy!

Have fun in OR.
