so confused...my road bars can accept a mountain stem.....Trevo

I got some Profile design ergo road bars from nashbar. Along with it I got a profile design H2o stem(a sweet little stem) but it turned out to be a 1inch thredless stem, and I wanted to use it with a 1 1/8 to 1inch threaded stem adapter. So I was fidliing around with my bar, and wanted to see if my 130mm bontrager mtn stem would fit it. It DID!
Now that part that is confusing my is that mtn stems are 25.4mm clamping, and road stems and bars are usally 26.0mm diameter. Just to make sure that my bontrager stem wasent goofy in size, I tried a rockmountain stem, and it held the road bar with no problems. Can someone explain to me whats going on?

Thats not a real big deal, if you think about it that is only .6mm of difference in diameter, which when translated to the real difference circumference-wise, is really not much at all; about 1.8 mm. I have done the same thing with my older bike; used a profile 1" threaded to 1&1/8" threadless converter and an azonic stem with a salsa road bar. Works just fine.

Totally a kosher thing to do, should not slip at all. Now if you go the other way and use a 26.0 stem with a 25.4 bar, sometimes the clamp will make contact on both sides and you can not tighten it anymore. This might cause some slippage, but you can shim it or wrap a little aluminum can around the bar. The only other thing you should avoid is using a 31.7mm bar or stem with anything other than what it is meant to be used with. Its lookin' good, good luck with the project.

Thanks for clarifying that fer me. Makes sense now. I took that pic in my room

Iam kinda bummed I cant use the profile stem. Its such a sweet stem, but unless i can rind a 1inch threded to 1inch thredless stem converter I cant use it. OH well Ill give the bontrager a try.
I should have a postable bike this week for everyone to drool over

Why dont you get a stem convertor and take it to a machine shop and get it turned down to 1", it shouldnt be too difficult to do if there is enough material, considering its only an eight of an inch

But the time and effort and whatever it costs to get it lathed isent worth it, casue i can just get a new stem when I return the one that dosetn fit.

Plue I found out that QBP makes a 1inch threded to 1inch thredless converter, its about 18 bucks too

...Look very closely for any gaps between the clamp and the bar, especially at the back of the stem. That 0.6mm can prevent the bar from fully seating. If you tighten the clamp enough to keep the bar from slipping you can crush the bar. Not a good idea.

Ritchey does make a stem that works with both 25.4 and 26.0 bars. It has a slight taper at the open edges where the clap is split. I have used a file to taper the edges of a cheap MTB stem to fit a road bar.
yeah I checked that......Trevo

Not a problem, it seats perfecty. But now that I got the bar actually put on the bike, the stems just not gonna cut it. Its only got like 5 degrees of rise, so upsidedown it still (due to headtube angle) dosent provide much drop. Iam just gonna return the profile design and get one that fits.
