| Isis BB Recommendations? - Newbie Question | ss-montana May 25, 2003 6:48 PM | | I'm building up my first ss, and I am looking for some bottom bracket recommendations. At this point, I'm leaning toward the Isis drive Truvative SS crank - it's simple, relatively inexpensive, and comes in the right sizes (175-mm, 32-t) with guard.
What is the best bang for the buck in for an Isis drive bb? The product reviews in mtbr.com say stay away from the Race Face Isis bb's and recommend the FSA Isis bb's. Other experiences? Or, should I stay away from Isis altogether and go with the old tried and ture square taper? Thanks. |
| Unless you want to change your BB often ... | scorcher seb May 26, 2003 2:14 AM | | ...I would probably stay away from ISIS. If you can stand Shimano, Octalink sounds like a good option.
I'm on my third FSA ISIS BB in 9 months. Albeit in wet conditions, which don't help. I think they are all pretty much subject to the same issue, whether they are cheap or expensive, so if you do go ISIS, get the cheap one! |
| As much as I hate to admit it... | Skateparks May 26, 2003 8:11 AM | | UN-72 Octalink is hard to beat.
Plus, XT cranks are super light, look fine and perform flawlessly...not to mention they are about $109 with rings.

| Thanks Tom... | ss-montana May 26, 2003 5:58 PM | | I have run shimano bb's (ultegra & xtr) for a while now, with general all around good luck except for the first generation of "new" (98) xtr bb's.
I was hoping to build a "shimano free" single speed, but that may have to wait. Chris King was planning to build a Isis dribe bb, but that project is on hold, so the xt option is worth considering. Cheers. |
| I've had lots of problems with ISIS... | erolthegreat May 27, 2003 9:25 AM | | I've been through at least 3 RF ISIS BB's in a little over a year.
- cracked cup (stuck in bb shell)
- bad bearings
- can't tell when it's tightened enough (hard stop doesn't work, proper torque doesn't work)
Very disappointed in RF. |
