Failed Phil BB(4 posts)

Failed Phil BBUnoPete
May 26, 2003 2:23 PM
As I was checking chain tension before a ride I noticed some play in the BB. About an eight inch at the end of the cranks. I did the ride anyway and it did not get worse but after getting home and taking the BB out I found the bearing housing was cracked and split. Has anyone else had this problem with the Phil Wood BB? Any recommendations for a better BB? This one did last 3 years.
tain't none better, you can make it good as newclub

not sure what you mean by the bearing housing. one of the cups cracked? Or the cartridge bearing? Either way, Phil will set you up with the new part you need. Anything can fail, I recently saw a busted King headset cup, but Phils phail least. Get something else and give me you Phil, I'll fix it and ride it another 20 years.
I've tried many brands of 6903 bearings in my old Merlin and Phil's are far and away the best. Also the most expensive.
I tried a set of EnduroMax bearings, because I liked the sound of that, figured they'd be more durable. Put them in last month, already got side play.
I'll contact PhilUnoPete

Thanks for the recommend. I'll contact Phil and see what it takes to get it fixed. The cartridge bearing cracked open and let the ball bearings fall out.

One of my bearings cracked too. I took it over to Brent at Phil Wood in downtown San Jose. He mentioned that I had swiss bearings which rolled good but didn't have the best grime protection. Press, press, tap and my BB was like brand new again with Japanese bearings. They've worked perfectly for the last 6 months.
