| re-using spokes a bad idea? | natetheskate May 27, 2003 8:33 AM | | Usually when someone asks if something is a bad idea, they know it is, and just want someone to say they can get away with it, so here's my dilemma. I built a rear wheel with a WI eccentric hub on a Mavic 517.(3x, 14g, brass nips) I now have a SS frame, and want to use the hub on my wife's converted SS and build a new rear wheel for myself. I have another set of 517's for the job, and a phil hub, but the new rims are black, and I really like the red ano rims the WI is built on. I have ridden the wheel about 8-10 times--will anyone support me in unlacing the WI hub and re-using the spokes and nipples on a new rim? (same as original rim, just a different color.) |
| If the spokes are the right size - no problem | shiggy May 27, 2003 9:04 AM | | Since you are using the same type rim just tape the new rim on the old one and move the spokes across after you loosen them. |
| As long as they are the right length | steelbike May 27, 2003 9:07 AM | | there should not be a problem, as you have little mileage on them. I've done it on road and mtb wheels and it's worked fine for me as long as the components are in good condition. |

| RIM SWAP V/S REUSING SPOKES | ERoman May 27, 2003 9:26 AM | | The question is a bit mis leading. What you are proposing is what most mechanics/wheel builders concider a rim swap. The idea of swaping the rim for another of the same model or one that uses the same spoke length is fine as lond as the spokes are NOT removed from the hub or taken out of the pattern. The issue is avoiding having the spokes "seat" themselves and conform in shape to another situation (another angle due to different hub/rim/or lacing pattern). Rim swaps are fine once, after that the spokes will tend to break due to stress in building and releiving stress(unlacing)...good luck....Eric |
